Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs '00 -- Pale yellow, citrus (grapefruit) and apple notes, toasty nuance, so crisp and fresh, very elegant, subtle power, delicious.

Domaine Yves Cuilleron Condrieu La Petite Cote '10 -- Pale straw color, bashful fruit scents, ample acid, svelte profile, spicy accents, nice roundness, lively vigor, fine food wine.

Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet Clavoillon 1er Cru '07 -- Golden, smooth tropical fruits, enticing bouquet, slight Meursault-like toastiness, wonderful interplay of fruit and acid all in balance, show-stealer.

Vega-Sicilia Único '86 En Double Magnum -- Dark red, forward dark cherries and berries, complex bouquet and palate, still intense and tightly wound, some vanilla, almost creamy texture, lots going on with youthful trophy.

Mystery Wine 1 -- Dark red, lovely bouquet of dark fruits, some vanilla, round and smooth on palate, hints of the small fraction of Merlot in the blend, well made.

Mystery Wine 2 -- Dark red, ripe black fruits, maybe some underlying floral scents, thick and chewy, brawny profile, high octane, could be more integrated.

Mystery Wine 3 -- Dark red, complex aromas, herbs, cassis, dark berries, dense concentration, blackberries, definitely a powerhouse, strong alcohol, shows like a new release.

Chateau de Fargues '01 -- Light gold, tropical fruits, apricots, hints of nuttiness and caramel, medium body/density, generous flavors, acid well in balance, some spicy complexity.

As to the mystery wines...

Predominant guesses initially were that the high octane 2nd and 3rd mystery wines were Australian, perhaps Shiraz. The wines managed to smooth out somewhat at a fairly rapid rate so that guesses began to get closer to being accurate. Ultimately, someone guessed two of the producers but, as I recall, didn't stipulate for which wines.

Specifically, the second two wines were way beyond my preferences with respect to power and alcohol. The Merlot which I identified in the 1st mystery wine led me to assign a level of charm to it.

The mystery wines were...

Holmes Family Napa Private Reserve '02 --

Bond St. Eden Napa Valley '02 --

Harlan Estate Napa Valley '02 --
