Vine Nerds

Serious question: is there really that much irrigation going on in Napa?

I think so.

I've always found it very peculiar with vines in the floodplain of a river.

Really interesting, Robert, thanks.

That will be great if their influence leads to water conservation.

And who knows? Decent wine...?

Yixin,

If for any reason you ever find yourself in Napa, I think you'll see most of the vineyards equipped with drip irrigation.

I was there 11 years (!) ago. I noticed some lines but I had naively assumed that the consumption was lower.

Given that there is no rain during the growing season, it's not necessarily bad for quality. There are some appellations in Italy that permit it for good reasons, too.

Most famous vineyards in the Wachau had drip lines the last time I went through.

Of course, they're well up the hill from the river.
