CWD: '04 Alesia Kanzler Pinot Noir

2004 Alesia Kanzler Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast, alc 14.4%.. this is the 2nd label of Rhys..nose is inviting with forest floor notes...the texture and taste are soft and mellow with dark cherry and raspberry notes..the finish is long and smooth and the tannins have receded into the background...an excellent PN and showing the best it has thus far...completed the food nicely
 
Not a terrifically focused wine, but a good one nonetheless. I don't really see why Jay Miller (ours, not the fat man) and others go so gaga over them when they'll turn up there noses at like-minded Pinot Noir. That said, I like what Kevin Harvey and crew are doing there. A good approach and solid wines.
 
Well, the '04 Kanzler and '06 Green Valley are the only Alesias that have really excited me so far. But I really respect what they're aiming for and suspect that age may reveal greater depths in the others. Besides, I'd like to be able to pull a Tom Hill on something.

Totally agree. I've pulled back a little on these. Thought they were amazing at first. Nice wines, but there are many others out there, and a lot of times at better price points. I like Kevin as well and he'll be able to make something unique out of the vineyards he has though.

And that's the other basis for my interest (in the Rhys wines specifically) which is that I'm very interested in seeing what will develop from the Santa Cruz terroir. But I suspect we'll have to wait for the wines to get some more bottle age to have a real idea.

I agree that age is needed.. I am generally encouraged by these early showings..in all likelihood, I plan to wait 3-7 yrs for the remaining bottles ..all the requiste parts appear to be there..the wine is in balance...the acidity is good...time will tell!
 
the chards are special. but, so are Mount Eden's.
and really, I am hoping for Rhys to be a wine that can age well. here's to hoping.
 
Mt. Eden is really great juice. Built to please those who revile California Chardonnay. Prices are creeping up though.

Not to be confused with Villa Mt. Eden. I wonder how that happened?
