Party Wines

A friend of mine was having a party and solicited my advice for some bottles. I was very happy about this because given what the rest of the guests brought (including some sour and misconstrued Becks Oktoberfest beer and various bottles of wine that re-opened my eyes to what people who are not wine geeks buy) it was nice to have something drinkable around.

I started with the peppery and herbal 2006 Clos Roche Blanche Touraine La Closerie. I thought 2006 was a big bulky year? I guess this is Touraine.

Those who wanted fruit drank the 2007 Ich Vin de Pays de l'Herault les Hrtiques and were happy. Although I preferred the 2007 Chteau dOupia Minervois, which in my opinion was well worth the extra few bucks for the greater depth and poise.

Needing some refreshment, I was very happy to see a few bottles of the 2007 Ppire Muscadet de Svre et Maine Sur Lie that provided me with all the fresh salty spray I needed to make it through the end of the evening.

Out of gruesome but professional curiosity, what were the other bottles brought?

I don't remember names. One truly horrid Bourgogne rouge but mostly non-descript Southern American and Spanish red wines that I could not keep putting in my mouth and probably cost more than the Ich wines! (Although maybe not all of them)

I like your choices. Ironically, I have dumbed down the red to a Rioja Crianza or inexpensive Spanish garnacha for friends before, and brought a bottle of Chinon for myself.

I'm assuming you didn't bring the Pepiere yourself?

I gave my friend a list of potential wines to buy (from Chambers, could you tell) and these were the ones he purchased.

How's the 2007 d'Oupia compared to the 2006?

I haven't paid lots of attention but for me these wines are pretty consistent from year to year. I had a few bottles of the 06 and it was pretty similar to this 07, maybe a touch bigger. Perhaps others have devoted more analytical attention?

Chambers actually has a terrific, under-$10 Garnacha these days, the Menguante 2007 Cariena

Errr... Is this a joke I'm not privy to, Cliff?
