The Boulevardier

From the Thirsty South Website (yes I get the irony...)

"The Boulevardier is one of my favorite cocktails typically one and half or two parts bourbon, one part sweet vermouth, one part Campari. Sound familiar? It’s a bit like a Negroni another great cocktail one part gin, one part sweet vermouth, one part Campari. I say “a bit,” because even though the recipes share the vermouth and Campari, the way in which gin and bourbon play with those two other ingredients is kinda like the difference between a bright spring day, full of awakening, and an autumnal afternoon, leaves falling, the cold of winter around the corner.

Too abstract? Think sharp and vibrant (the Negroni) vs. rich and rounded (the Boulevardier). In any case, they’re both great drinks, albeit for different moods. And they’re both easy drinks to make if you’ve got those basics in your home bar. Combine, stir over ice, strain. Kaboom."

Great drink....I used Big Bottom Small Batch Bourbon from Port Casks, 91 proof, from Hillsboro OR...with Dolin Sweet Vermouth and Campari...mod sweet up front but becomes more drying and intense over several seconds....More interesting than a Negroni

You can make it with rye as well, which can be really nice - my local place does it with Rittenhouse and it sends the drink in an earthy, mushroomy, moulding forest floor direction. Also nice for so-so bars; most places have halfway decent rye or bourbon, and "Two rye, one Campari, one sweet vermouth" is about as uncomplicated a description as you can get past call drinks.

One of my base drinks for experimenting, for sure.

Last night's was Rittenhouse (1.5oz), Campari (1), Vergano Chinato (1) with our Orange Sunshine bitters

Cynar also makes a fine replacement for Campari when using a milder bourbon.
