Facts on Natural Wine

LETTIE TEAGUE...

I was researching the topic of natural wine. When I asked wine professionals to define the term, each gave a different reply. Natural wine, it would seem, has a lot more to do with individual belief than it does with incontrovertible fact.

Although the number of natural wines in the world is relatively small, the topic has loomed large in recent years. It may be one of the most controversial in the wine world, with strong feelings expressed by partisans of both the "natural" and the not. Natural-wine proponents describe their wines as "pure" and "kind to the planet" and other wines as "industrial" or worse, while non-naturalists have likened their natural counterparts to cult members.

The term "natural wine" is fairly new, at least in terms of general parlance.

The Actual Facts Behind the Rise of Natural Wine

A lurker sent me that article this morning, but I couldn't bring myself to post it.

"I made three phone calls about a subject where my ignorance seemed to be absolute. I wrote down everything they said in a breezy style. Here it is!"

So what is the definition of natural wine?
dear Steve,

Read around about this particular point and get back to the class. There is a bit of history surrounding this apparently innocent question.

there is no definition. the monkey, sfjoe and .sasha fund a lab that analyzes the farts produced by satisfied drinkers. given a particularly fruity bottom-burb, samples will be taken, and teh results forthcoming.

it is all very hush hush. rumors of ouija boards and teh king of teh real winez cannot be ruled out.

that's the gist. there is more, but the chances are that my life is in danger for revealing this much.

fb.

Perhaps natural wine fits into U.S. Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart's definition of pornography: You know it when you see it.

Steve, Lettie is not surprisingly very late to this wild party. Keith, for instance did a perfectly fine job describing the situation last year.

As do the 80 comments, some by known persons.

Man, when Tom Wark has a drum, he sure does bang it.

Long and loud.

Nice to reread Keith's article. It was a pleasure the first time and nearly as much the second time around. Hadn't read the comments before.
