a few questions for those in the bay area:

1) is a16 (still) worth a night's dinner opportunity in the bay area? if so, the SF or oakland location?
2) what about camino in oakland?
3) where would you go for not hype-y, just good stuff? good wine list or byob preferred. please don't say mission chinese
4) anyone want to eat and drink together? not that i know any of you really, but i would love to meet and drink some of these quite interesting new california wines (la clarine, arnot-roberts, broc, wind gap, etc).

I'm a fan of the Basque food at Piperade. This wine list looks like it's two years old, but it should give you a good idea of the wine they have there.

'Ate at Bay Wolf in Oakland couple nights ago. Good food, pleasant surroundings but no big hype; we opened nine bottles and they did not charge us corkage.
I'm not sure no corkage is a policy, but that's what happened.
Vaughn, I don't know you either but if you get up to Sonoma County, I'd be happy to get together for dinner. I don't have any of those producers in my cellar but I bet I could find something you might classify as "interesting."
Best, Jim

Oakland has two creative restos doing Asian street food. Hawker Fare and Juhu Beach Club. We went to the latter last week. We had all the pavs, which were great, although the short rib was under-spiced, sev puri, and a Bombay sandwich. I bet they do corkage. Neato is a good one for their happy hour tacos.

I don't know of any interesting BYOB places unless you want to tag along for a late sushi dinner in the city. Should be plenty of good stuff, I'll just need to make sure the regulars aren't taking a week off to exercise moderation.

This has been much discussed if you search a bit, but under 3), I'd mention Aziza.

Right. Go little iPhone keyboard!
Your auto-correct chooses "exorcise" over "exercise"? Remind of your line of work, Padre?

No, I just spelled it the other/wrong way when I was typing on the little phone keys.

Back to the issue at hand, I second Aziza.

sorry for not replying. schedule next week turns out to be more complicated than i expected, so no chance of getting up to sonoma (though i will some time).

aziza is definitely awesome. i also think st vincent (valencia at 24th st) is rocking it hard. i would go back. the food is good, the wine list is even better.

Don't know if I can make any rendezvous (biz trip and teaching in Davis that week). But in the East Bay I'd recommend Downtown and Ochame in Berkeley for food. Last dinner at Downtown featured a stellar mixed grill of goat with a delicious Minervois. And just opened in downtown SF is Laurent Manrique's Aquitaine. No idea how good the food is there, but you have to admire a place with Floc de Gascogne and Fronton by the glass.

Christian, I wonder if you mean the restaurant that's in the old Downtown space; Downtown closed a few years back.

Thanks for the correction Steve, I meant the appropriately named Revival, helmed by the estimable Amy Murray in the old Downtown space. Good wine and beer choices, good flatbreads, good ingredients, we've enjoyed every visit. Flexible space too, with spacious tables but also plenty of casual bar and counter seating, including a two-sided counter that might work well for jeebuses (jeebi?).

It's out-of-the-way, and there can be a bit of a wait, but Outerlands in the Outer Sunset is worth a trip. Fantastic food, very good bread. Even lunch is worth a trip. No reservations, but Ocean Beach is a block away so put your name down, give them a contact number, and go for a stroll (but bring some layers).

I haven't been for dinner, and I sometimes drop by for lunch if I am passing through, but I wouldn't quite schlep all the way out there from downtown for what I've eaten at lunch.

Dagan has some good wines on their list.

Yeah, I guess I'm thinking more play than work - riding the N out and having lunch and a walk on the beach isn't too horrible, though the summer fog has been in full effect for the past few weeks...
