Some wines at Amali

Maureen, Suzanne, Salil and I met for dinner last night at Amali (very noisy but some excellent food ) with the following wines

2001 Hirtzberger Hochrain Riesling Smaragd - gorgeous, long, complex seems like the start of a long period of peaking.

1996 Cazin Rennaissance - Lovely, sweet, fantastic match with the asparagus

1988 Drouhin Corton Bressandes - more depth than the MSD, just as complex, delicious. Kept improving as the night went on

1988 Drouhin MSD des Ormes - lighter, complex, perhaps showing a little more on the bouquet. Lovely at first, seemed to fall apart after 2 hours or so, but then came back together later.

Both '88s still showed their vintage tannins on first pour but it became much less apparent with the food and as the evening progressed.

That was a lovely evening, and thanks for organizing it.

The Hirtzberger was the Hochrain Riesling Smaragd, not Honivogl - aside from that, I think we're in pretty much complete agreement on the wines. A really nice lineup, and I found the Corton more and more compelling the more air it had.

What did you say?
the food was very good and the wines were excellent.
the MSD tasted more youthful to me at first but the Corton had more there there.
