What experiences to the contrary have you had with this producer or this bottling?

Never really cared for Beaucastel...There's always something missing in the wines. No "spark". VT has it, yes. Rayas, certainly. But Beaucastel has always reminded me of the vinous equivalent of a starched white shirt.

Couldn't disagree with this assessment of Beaucastel more. They've consistently provided some of the best CDP I've had.

Brad, I'm with you.

Perrins/Beaucastel is probably my favorite producer world wide. I've been a selective buyer since 1989 plus some prior to that including one bottle of the 1970 (which vintage I don't believe I have ever sampled...but am looking forward to at some point).

I'm especially carefully guarding my stashes of 1989 and 1990 which are other-worldly.

It's quite simple. I was being sarcastic. I own one bottle of this wine and look forward to drinking it. When I post it is mainly to make fun of the people on Wine Disorder. Those who know me already know that (cf. Oswaldo).

I can understand not liking Beaucastel, I suppose. Calling it formal and without character--a starched white shirt--seems to me, in the ways one can quantify such a judgment, just wrong. In every way, it is atypical for CdP, resistant to its fashions and very much its own wine. "Spark" is, of course, another thing since it isn't the wine but you that lights up or doesn't.
