One of the last of the great self-experimenters, ol' Sasha S. My friend and colleague Dave Nichols is a friend and wrote the foreward to Pikhal. From him, I've learned a lot of juicy details about SS, including the story that he developed DOM (aka "STP") while employed by Dow in the '60s. Shulgin's version of events is that he quit Dow when he realized the use that the Army wanted to make of the psychoactives he was developing; Dow's version is that they fired him when they realized that the stuff he was making for them was finding its way out onto the street. You make the call. Dave also says of Shulgin that he's more shaman than chemist, which seems reasonable to me.
