Hail on the Côte des Blancs

According to a winemaker in Baden yesterday, 2013 is shaping up up to be a very good year right now. That may augur well for Alsace, too.

Same from a top Nahe producer yesterday.

Savoie has been bad so far. I'll write about the Loire but it'll take too long. Alsace (okay, Haut-Rhin) is okay.

Though one has to wonder how many more days like this one (it reached 39 C on the A5 today) it'll take for 2013 to turn into 2003 redux...

It would take quite a few. And don't forget, there was also drought in 2003, not the case this year. Finally, 2003 is generally a good year in Germany.

My 2003 J.J. Christoffels have been quite good, both Spaet- and Auslesen. Still working through the latter. A little plush, yes, but they develop well.

Schaefer's 03s are damn good. I also really like the sweeter wines I've had from Diel, von Othegraven, and AJ Adam - his Dhron Hofberger Tholey Auslese is incredible. Some of the other '03s I've had recently have shown really nicely (from Hexamer, Saarstein, Eva Clusserath, and Leitz), much fresher and more vibrant than I'd expect and very well balanced.

Just had J.-J. Prum's WS Spatlese, which has barely budged. It is still full of gas and sulphur, but the proportions are right, and it's amazingly fresh. It will surely live longer than I do.
