i have just moved and would like to find a merchant. any recommendations? especially helpful if in bloomsbury, knightsbridge, or south kensington.

and if anyone has thoughts on locations where good produce may be had, please share.

No farmers markets over there?

You're certainly in the area for traditional wine shops. Lots of options depending on what you want to buy. It might seem stodgy but I liked Lea & Sandeman's for Baudry, Coudert, Briailles, and other stuff like that.

Don't overlook Fortnum & Mason for its house labels. Last time I checked, they included producers such as Horst Sauer for the Franken wines, Dauvissat for Chablis, etc. (Producers were identified in small type on the labels.)

Robersons on Kensington High Street & The Sampler in South Kensington should be good places to start in your neighbourhood. If you can bear it, try Hedonism in Mayfair. Sampler probably best price-wise.

very helpful. the sampler is extra-convenient and i must have walked by it five or six times without noticing. meanwhile, i have also found a gonzo-ish place called planet of the grapes which has some possibly interesting stuff from southwest france.

has anyone made the serious hike out to les caves de pyrene?: http://www.lescaves.co.uk/

@Rahsaan: the markets are good but they won't last much longer. also still looking for a good general grocer for dry and bulk goods. and meat, fish, poultry purveyors too.

i will report back, if anyone's interested.

I didn't realize they had a retail outlet.

But hey, it's right on the way to Godalming!

Of course, they have their associated restaurants in town that see a lot of biz from this crowd.

Yes, growing seasons are not your friend on that Island. I remember getting very very tired of apples and pears as I awaited spring/summer at long last. But I do remember markets going through the winter, greens, potatoes, etc. But there are of course other options. I'm sure you'll find something nearby.

If you head over to 259 Hackney Road, also check out Broadway Market on Saturdays and then stop into Noble Fine Liquor for wine and beer in that neck of the woods too.

In South Kensington, Vini Italiani has a decent selection of Italian wines.

i was at the green man and french horn a few nights ago—a sweet little spot. (a bottle of 2004 brin de chevre: remarkable and unexpected, but practically made for rillettes and cornichons, hake and capers, and gooseberry fool)

Very similar. I ended up in Cambridge MA shortly after London and many aspects were very recognizable! (Including the great fish, at least you have that)
