Levi's Podcast

Just wanted to plug Dalton's I'll Drink to That: the interviews with winemakers, especially, are a great resource. I listened to the casts with Fourrier, Occhipinti, and Texier again last week on a long drive, and all three are classics; today I took in the segment with Selbach.

Just one of the features of the conversations is listening to the vignerons talk about past vintages, describing the personality of each one in detailed terms. Well worthwhile.

Those of us in the hinterlands could use more volume on the podcasts. I listen at max volume and it's tough to hear. Is there anything you can do to increase the volume?

True for the locals as well.

Seconded. I'd throw in the Roulot interview to round out a quadfecta.

Personally, I think that Levi needs a bit more comedy in his podcasts. I'd suggest a double billing of Alice and Tom Wark on the subject of Natural Wine, or Helen Turley and Aubert de Villaine on The Merits of New World Pinot Noir. I'd also tune in for D Zylberberg's vertical tasting of Brezeme (paired with bangin' Peking Duck, natch).

I'll follow a story in Italy and be familiar with the main players and then I'll hear NPR's Sylvia Poggiolido a story on it and I won't recognize many of the main players in the story. It's because Poggioli pronounces their names in authentic Italian and in my mind their names sound like how a Yankee not fluent in Italian would pronounce them.

I had this problem with the Eric Texier interview. Brezeme pronounced the names in fluent French and my brain chugged along and finally figured out who he was talking about it. A lot of names I didn't know. Perhaps Levi could figure out a way to weave in more of a gringo pronounciation of the name to help his monolingual listeners.

Or you could make a bit of effort. You seem to put effort into the rest of this pursuit. And recognizing words that you have seen printed in Roman script shouldn't be one of the more challenging tasks in the world.

These were interesting from day one but they just keep getting better. Interviewing is a much harder skill than it looks, and you can see how Levi's gotten more natural at it over time. And somehow keeps finding interesting new people to feature just when you figure he's surely exhausted everyone! Well done. My only complaint is that I have to convert them to mp3 from that weird iTunes format to listen to them in my car.

IF I could figure out the vowels and consonants, I would Google it. Eric's speech is too authentic.
I made a modest suggestion with the goal of helping Levi broaden the appeal of his podcast. If I'm having problems understanding a name I assume some other wine geeks are having problems as well.

In this world of social computing, we should all visit his podcasts and assign tags to them. That would help others to find them and, incidentally, explain a bit about each one.

Or, so the theory goes.

I think authentic may be the wrong word here and which is eliciting the types of reactions above. Just because you speak clearly in a mainstream version of the language doesn't make it less authentic. And that should be fine for these types of podcasts, without devolving into all those horrid Gary V gringoisms.

I haven't heard the podcasts so I have no idea how thick or how clear the pronunciation is. If the interview is in English, I would imagine he is already speaking in an international style, but I could be wrong.

Thanks, Keith.
