Coates on 2010 Burgundy...

All reports underline the same conclusion about the 2010 harvest. It has turned out a great deal better than one could possibly have imagined at the end of June. If only it had been drier in August! Not that August was wetter than the average, indeed in southern Burgundy precipitation was the same as in 2009.

But Maureen, if only it had been hotter they could have been 2009s!

but then we would have been deprived of the rhetoric, declaring 2009 a hypothetical combination of 2003 and 2010 ! I live for these things, you know.

It seems every vintage is best described as a hypothetical combination of two or more prior vintages. Of course, it is always the best attributes of the vintages in question - never the less helpful characteristics.

I'm happy that I just grabbed a good bit of the Bouchard Volnay Caillerets Ancienne Cuvee Carnot 1er Cru '09 for a pleasing price.

Personally i can't think of another vintage 2010 reminds me of. This might be heresy but it seems to be my favorite vintage since 1999. And i might even like it more than 1999!

I first tried 2010s (6 jadot reds) about four days after spending a couple hours over 8 2009s and dinner. The 2009s all showed well and were young and grapey like you would expect (this was about 18 months ago). The 2010s in contrast seemed older. I don't mean less fresh. I mean more put together and integrated. Great (but refined) tannins and an elegance to the fruit i loved.

And every single one i have had since has been like that - the rouget vosne villages at dinner last night, the three boudots (grivot, meo, and potel) a small group of us had a couple of weeks ago, more.
