Interesting Jon Bonné article on Coppola/Inglenook

Jon has nice bit of work on changes at the Coppola properties in Napa. I haven't had any of their wines in many years, nor have I had anything from Ch. Margaux's Philippe Bascaules.

I was a bit surprised to see the circs of a very cold vintage coming in at 13.8% being described as evidence of a newly classical style, but I haven't tried the wine.

Has anyone tried anything lately?

If they picked at 13.8 potential alcohol this would still be one of the lowest numbers of any serious Napa red. As I understand it the rest of them are being picked at far higher brix numbers, then pushed to lower alcohol in the cellar.

Lou, Lou, are you out there?
I'm in Ashland Oregon at the Shakespeare Festival will be back in Napa in a few days. What exact info would you like and I will see what I can do. Alcohol levels are down in the 011 vintage but the weather was cooler. Everbody doesn't lower the alcohol levels in the cellar but exactly who and what is not easy to pin down. There is definitely a trend toward lower alcohol and less wood, it's apparent in our store by customer demand. Trends come and go to who knows where?
It's still the buying public that determines styles in wine vinification in spite of the small world that the "Disorderlies" inhabit.

We may regret our lack of influence, some, but we cherish our insularity.

Anyhow, have you had a chance to try any of the Coppola wines lately? They aren't well distributed here in Disorderlystan.

Last time I tasted some Coppola wines was a couple of years ago and I was not impressed but they were not in the totally disgusting mode of wood and alcohol. I'll keep my eyes peeled for an opportunity to taste some current releases.

We admire your willingness to throw yourself on that grenade for the benefit of the platoon.
