Right place, right time last Saturday. Two friends brought a 2010 Donhoff TBA and a 1985 Gentaz to the HDH auction in Chicago, and I had what were probably the best riesling and syrah of my life at the same lunch.
my first gentaz was really something. so wild, rustic and edgy. most of us were wide-eyed when just smelling the thing. tons of olives and meat. just pure northern rhone goodness.
the riesling was quite amazing too. deep aromas of tropical fruits, stone and florals filled the glass, but the palate really stole the show. just endlessly deep, layered, and complex. one of those anti-social wines that make you recede from conversation and eye-to-eye contact...just let me be.
