1999 Boxler Riesling and a Roty Marsannay Rose

A dinner with co-workers that took on a little special meaning, so I dug into my limited supply of Boxlers.

2004 Domaine Joseph Roty Marsannay Ros - France, Burgundy, Cte de Nuits, Marsannay (12/7/2008)
Still delicate. Not much on the nose. Maybe some herbs. The fruit flavors are understated. Bright red Jolly Rancher fruit flavors, but not intense. I got a llittle bit of tea flavor I didn't get on an earlier bottle. Balanced. Still a nice finish. This also seemed a little bit overwhelmed by the food at times. Atherton Wine imports.

1999 Albert Boxler Riesling Sommerberg L31 - France, Alsace, Katzenthal, Alsace Grand Cru AOC (12/7/2008)
My first Boxler riesling and a tough one to call. The wine was elegant and light and tasty in so many ways. But there was a significant herbal note in the attack and midpalate that tailed away in the finish and that detracted from the overall greatness of the wine. It didn't dominate the wine, but it was noticeable. The nose is fantastic. Strong diesel and lime and pears. A pleasure to smell. The cut of this wine is excellent. There's a vibrant acidity but it isn't the lip-stinging kind. Great balance. On the palate, great minerality and citrus flavors along with a touch of honey and some white flowers. Nice finish. I don't know if that herbal streak will age out. A Robert Chadderdon Selections import.

'99s a problematic year, no matter how good the producer. Not bad, precisely, but the wines are almost always "off" in some way vs. their ideal states, and that's becoming clearer with age. Not to engage in vintage generalizations, but, well...
