Florian makes pretty lovely wine doesn't he? Doesn't hurt that he seems to be a really nice guy too.

Indeed. However, the drier 2011s that I tasted last week (Fass 2, Fass 11 and Fass 12) either seemed to be closing down or appeared a bit disjointed. Perhaps the higher alcohol of the drier ones has something to do with it. The lower alcohol feinherbs and sekts, without hindrance to the aromatics, dance very lightly around the palate.

I had a really fun time, and it was great to meet Trung and Dan (who was kind enough to ferry me back to the B&B), and all the other faces new to me, and not-so-new also. I liked the Sekt quite a lot, and the Rougeard was so lovely.

Dsmn! Really sorry I missed this - Georg had invited me but I had a prior commitment. Would have been lovely to see you again, Jeff.

The Lauer Sekt is, as I understand it, always a single vintage wine... the "reserve" releases (91 and 93 are floating around) have a little vintage year printed on the label - there's one at Pearl & Ash (which I enjoyed immensely).

Ridge 1996 Petite Sirah, York Creek - today's object lesson that tannins are a preservative, brutal, unevolved, presumably very similar to itself 15+ years ago which prompts Steve to ask, "Is there any reason to give this grape a second look?"

Yes, but with this grape, in this vineyard, it can take decades. The great vintages do develop complexity and character.

Drank a 1975 last Saturday that was really nice. But, storage time is money and I'm still not sure that aging Petite Sirah pays off compared to some other varieties.

The 75 York Creek from Freemark Abbey was (probably still is) an awesome wine. But point taken. Good PS is a wine to buy for your kids birth year, but not always for yourself.
