A perfect young Bourgueil

Taluau Bourgueil 1996 Cuvée Domaine

This was a wine of great promise from a great Bourgueil vintage. In the early days I enjoyed many bottles, though David always insisted it was a wine for aging. It showed a lot of ripe material, though it's true it never fully opened up. Well now it is open and blooming, and as beautiful as I might have imagined. It is youthful and upright, very well held together. The fruit is rich and dark, layered generously over mineral and herbal elements. For those who have, this wine will go for a very long time. Or just drink it now and live the good life.

What do you make of '95 Croix Boissee these days, Jeff?
You must mean "Signature". I haven't had it recently, which must surely be a mistake. Other 95s that I have had recently, "Les Cornuelles" from Serge et Bruno Sourdais, Raffault "Les Picasses", as well as some nearby wines, "la Grande Vignolle" From Filliatreau, and "Malgagnes" from Yannick Amirault all seem to be in the drink category, not the drink-and-hold.

Glad to hear. I've been through several bottles of the '96 VV and while all have been reasonably tasty none have inspired as much as this note. There has been some variation as well.
Perhaps the VV still needs a year or two.

A magnum of this was just so-so for me about a year ago. A quiet, contemplative thing that seemed just a bit past it's prime. K&L had them at a great price a couple years back.

"K&L had them at a great price a couple years back."

quite so.

fb.

We've been working our way through a case of the 02 VV. Seemed worn out a couple of years ago, but a recent bottle was sprightly with a hint of mint.
