Two 2005 Melons

2005 Pepiere Briords

Showed an off note upon opening, hinting oxidation. It passed, and the wine showed pleasantly enough, rather light, decent acidity, but lacking the interest and goodness Briords trains you to expect. The off-note re-emerged in the leftovers the following day.

2005 Luneau-Papin L d'Or

Drinking beautifully right now, with a glyceral roundness to the texture that wasn't there before, half-mature flavors of tangy leather, and a decent acid spine that floats in and out of focus. Very robust, with plenty of life, I imagine. I haven't really gotten this wine before, but now, wow.

We also ingested a 2011 Brun Fleurie that was good enough the first night, rather better the second.

Opened another 2005 Briords tonight: fresh, crisp, vital. Converged over the course of the evening towards an asymptote of increasing lightness and transparency, with intensifying minerality. A treat.

Indian Summer? Love L d'Or, but seems harder to find now than several years ago?
Just had a 2007 Granite de Clisson earlier this week and that had a touch oxidation to it. Seemed quite ready to go.

That's unexpected. I hid my few bottles of 07 away and didn't expect to take them out again for a while yet.

Agree L d'Or is less plentifully abundant in the market now: perhaps the Chinese have discovered it.

tried a couple of 07s in the past two years; very youthful, not rushing with the rest

what do folks make of 2010 clisson ? drink and hold, or just hold?

I had one a few months ago. After seeing the warnings, I gave it plenty of air, and it was beautiful. I don't plan on opening another for awhile.

I opened one in Chicago last year that was just so-so. I was planning on opening another soon in the spirit of scientific inquiry.
