TNR 2007 Vatan, Sancerre

Hey, it's gotta be good. After all, it's the only Sancerre the little monkey drinks. I have it on my 'to buy' list once this recession ends.

I had the Vatan about a month ago. Great minerality and acidity. We decanted. Wonderful color. A lot of fun to drink, even though it will be more fun in a year or two...

I had a number of the '07s as barrel samples in Angers in February. I think it will be a vintage enjoyed by those who chase acid, and I count myself among that group. My understanding of the vintage is that it started out horribly, with many growers fighting rot, but ended with perfect weather conditions. As a result yields are low but quality is high.

Vatan doesn't come to Angers, or maybe hides when I walk by.

Vattan does.

Maybe you have them confused or you managed a trip to Chavignol and got to meet the man. Lucky dog.

In any event, if I have the cash, I'm a buyer. Had the 2004 again the other day and it was dominant.

It is one of the few sauvignon I actively like and I think the finest expression of Chavignol.

Damn tootin'!

Tasted it on Monday, and while nice, I found it somewhat muted. It didn't have the great aromatics of a couple of other 2007 Sancerres I've tried.

Nice length, though.

I've not tasted Vat(t)an in 07.

But a number of usual suspects produced very sharp wines, notwithstanding the aromatic glory which such acidity is conducive to. They aired out well though, as a rule, leaving only partial permanent damage to the tongues of the impatient pop'n'pour-ers.

And according to another current thread, vlm doesn't only drink vatan, he also engages in an occasional odd cotat. I drink the even cotats, so if anyone is interested in a tasting note on an arbitrary cotat, email both of us, just in case.

duly noted...

Both Cotat's??

I broke a bottle of '06 a couple weeks ago. Luckily, it was sitting in a styro shipper, so I had a natural bowl to pour through a strainer. Wouldn't have been my choice to drink that evening, but man, was it good.

I like the 2007s I've tried in Sancerre. Less blowsy than 2006. Plus classique, or some such.

I haven't had Vatan, but I'd like to.

Sharon, I think his wines are often less flattering young.

I've only tried one 2007 Sancerre, so I can't comment on it as a whole. The one I did taste was the "Les Monts Damnes" from Pascal Cotat and it was pretty fucking awesome.
