CWD: 2005 Desvignes Javernières

Opened and decanted while roasting a chicken.

This is the first bottle that has been nice to me. Previous experiments have slapped me around like a red headed step-child. Showed very pinote, which I guess isn't a huge surprise. My friend sharing the bottle said he would have thought it to be Burgundy if the bottle wasn't in front of him and that's pretty much how it seemed to me. Loamy fruit with nice spices and a forrest-y quality. Good crunchy structure that was at the proper end of the palate. For at least a couple of hours this was impeccably balanced. After that, the palate closed down a bit, but the nose was still lovely. This bottle showed a lot of promise for the remaining ones in the cellar. I was beginning to get concerned that 2005s might never come around in a way that appealed to me, that they would just be brutal and then lovely old wines without the ribald "20s" that really appeal to me. I would say another year or two may help soften the edges a bit more and that this wine will be one of the highlights of the vintage in the next 5 years or so and surely among the longest lived.

No. Should I?
The only Desvignes I dip into these days is 2009 Voute St Vincent. It's moving slowly but in excellent balance; ripe but fresh, with plenty of verve.

Did you decant?

Not .sasha, but I have, this past summer, and it needed quite a bit of air, or more time.

A recent bottle of 2005 Lapierre Morgon was spectacular.

You old wine fetishist, you. My supply of '05s is down to some Roilette and a few Cote de Brouillys.

Don't know; I've been hands off for a while, but have itchy palms.

I thought I recalled that we'd had similar reactions to it and wondered if perhaps you'd broken discipline recently.

I'm not .sasha, but a recent '97 Desvignes Javernieres (.sasha, I think #1) was just waking up--still dark and brooding. The second glass was very good, but there is no rush with these.

I didn't even know a separate bottling existed until Gilman wrote up the 2005. Does it still exist, or has it been merged into the main bottling with the help of an artisanal banker?

Does anyone have 2005 Voute St Vincent? Now, that what I would really love to taste from 2005.

No one did, anymore than they know about the 2 or 3 bottlings of Pepiere.

I don't have recent info.

But there's nothing that Kevin McK likes better than a good inquiry about such subjects, so go for it!

Maybe. I found my last bottle of 2002 Cote du Py fading and that was a couple of years ago. Now, it could be interesting to someone who doesn't want there to be any fruit left in their wine, but it wasn't what I was looking for. My 1999s have been gone for a while.

I know that BJ had a 2006 the other night because Shawn and Lauren brought it to his house.

Desvignes is a special case in that it NEEDS the time. The Roilette Tardive from 2005 also.

I was actually worried that 2005s would go from being tough for years straight to old wine hell, but the Desvignes opening up in a friendly way assuaged that fear.

Did they bottle a Voute in 2005? I'm not sure they did.

That 2006 the other night was not ready.
It improved marginally with air but a definite hold and wait for me.

you mean a little too powerful and spherical, in a juicy way, with not enough detail ?

If so, I agree, except I don't think these 06s will become more interesting. what you see is what you get. Of course, I'd like to be wrong on this one.
