That SOMM movie

I was in a restaurant this week, informal in setting but fancy in food, and my server said to us, unprompted, "and don't worry, I'm a certified sommelier."

Of course, that was my first worry of the evening. Anyhow, the place has a brilliant list and I didn't need any help, but it was an unwelcome jolt.

How gauche (our two visits were mercifully lacking in such pretense).

The dude was correct but pretty chill otherwise.

Farnoush wasn't in the house, she would never do such a thing.

You might be oversimplifying just a tad.

What level of certification do you hold?

So to give him the benefit of the doubt it sounds like that may have been the first question that poor sommelier has been asked by a bunch of people. Which is even sillier than announcing your certification.

But blind wine dinners can be a lot of fun. I would never want to do it all the time but it has both confirmed and dispelled some wine prejudices I've held.

i used to not care. but a while back, some "somm" who had only managed to rise as far as attaining the level of respectful tastevin bearer in the divine court of mastersomms after 2 years in the industry poured my kistler "les noisetiers" chardonnay into a riedel winery varietal series - pahlmeyer chardonnay glass. as you can imagine, it totally ruined my dining experience.

so these days i refuse to deal with any wine waiter who hasn't attained at least grand pursuivant status. it just isn't worth teh risk.

fb.

Was once lectured about riesling by an idiot who ended their condescending bloviation with "And I know what I'm talking about. I'm a certified wine educator." Sadly there was no brilliant wine list or food involved to salvage the experience.
