Had it started showing any diesel/lactic qualities? Bleh.

Had the 2000 Niederhauser Hermannshohle Spatlese yesterday. Diesel? Some. Lactic? Maybe. Bleh? No. Not bad for a 2000. Soft, yet pleasant.
OTOH, I wonder if Beuker still wants to backfill his collection.

But as much as I like late 90s Donnhoff, the difference in style vis-a-vis the '94 is kind of shocking.

A '94 (auslese though) was one of several turkeys in a Hermannshohle vertical I organized a few years back. The older vintages were all so disappointing I was lucky to escape the pitchforks.
I am at the point where I find I prefer 98% of spatlese and auslese less than 8 years old or so, so I don't mean to single out Donnhoff, but I sure wish all those dollars I spent on Donnhoff over the years had gone to Prum or Grunhaus instead.
I have had '06 and '07 Hermannshohle spatlese within the past few weeks and they are both gorgeous now. I will be shocked if they get any better, but they can easily get a lot worse.
I am at the point where I find I prefer 98% of spatlese and auslese less than 8 years old or so, so I don't mean to single out Donnhoff, but I sure wish all those dollars I spent on Donnhoff over the years had gone to Prum or Grunhaus instead.

That was my feeling from the beginning. Donnhoff was always fun, but never really thrilling in the same way as producers like Prum or Grunhaus. So I never spent much money on Donnhoff.
Of course with my lack of storage capacity, there isn't much room to deal with the consequences of previous expenditures.

I wasn't at said dinner but it's infamous and led to the Donnhoff doesn't age meme. Weren't many of the bottles sourced from Dee Vine? They were the West Coast's equivalent of Crossroads.

Nah, the Donnhoff-doesn't-age meme predated that event by a long while. There were 3 bottles from Dee Vine but the ones showing badly were not limited to those 3 (and one of the bottles that DID show well was one of those 3). I've never heard any complaints about their storage conditions before and have had a number of other bottles from them show well. I will admit there were several bottles with shitty corks - but if a producer's going to use shitty corks, then a shitty showing is the natural consequence, not an aberration.originally posted by Gene Vilensky:

They had no temp control storage except for the Balz collection. All wine just sat out in a warehouse on the Embarcadero. Their reasoning was that in never gets hot on the Embarcadero. Except for when it does.
