2002 Dönnhoff Spȁtlese

I wouldn't trade very many of my spatleses for 30-year-old versions of the same. If anyone is really planning on waiting 30 years to crack theirs, well, good luck with that!

I still want to know who broke into my cellar and wrote "does not age" on one of the Donnhoff boxes. I have a vague idea who it was though... a guest of SFJoe's perhaps? :-)

1982 Le Gallais is very nice now, I haven't had the Müller wines in a while. Both von Schubert and the Tyrell family made very nice wines in that vintage. Downriver: 1983 Prüms, well, duh. Rheinhold Haart, too. Not sure when to broach my Joh. Jos. Christoffel. And so on.

A well-made Spätlese, fortified with plenty of sugar and sulfur, will almost definitely reach the creamy stage of Riesling development after a few decades. Higher alcohol Rieslings get a touch too phenolic before then (but see 1979 CFE VT for a nice counter-example), and the really sweet ones just have too much sugar. So Spätlese and little Auslesen are your best bet.

Apparently my feeble attempt at satire in "What did you drink tonight" thread went unnoticed.
