I dig the wine and I know that many on this board do as well, but the mainstream press...!!!

2007 Dashe Cellars L'Enfant Terrible McFadden Farms Potter Valley Zinfandel ($24) Before you rush out to try Mike Dashe's curious experiment, a few caveats: Dashe picked these Mendocino County grapes early, fermented with native yeasts and aged the wine in a large cask with almost no use of the preservative sulfur dioxide. The result is a light, floral Zin - really more like Beaujolais - with lean, high-acid red fruit and a stony overtone. A fantastic example of outre winemaking done right.

Congrats Mike, please continue to make this wine and more like it!

I had this on Thanksgiving day. My dad pronounced it the best wine he had ever had and accused me of not generally serving him "the good stuff" in the past. Thanks, dad.

I thought the wine was pretty decent (and I'm certainly not a big zinfandel fan in general, although I certainly enjoy older Ridge Lytton Springs, Geyserville, etc) and would definitely try more wines made in this style. It's odd to think that this level of ripeness, native yeasts, large cask, etc. might be considered "outre."

Also:

I had L'Enfant Terrible twice while in New York last month and found it lovely, surprisingly familiar and yet strange.

(N.b. in link, too, 2005 Rocks & Gravel. Eric Asimov and I were obviously channeling the same wines that week.)
