An article by Dan Cossins in The Scientist breaks down what's known about the communication occurring between plants. Among the mechanisms discussed is the Common Mycelial Network (CMN) in which fungi connect the root systems of plants. If one exercises a fair degree of imagination, one can perhaps see a connection to our notions of terroir (or not, as the case may be):
