What did you drink tonight?

But the 12 fresh of the boat doesn't taste like the 02 did at the same stage

can you elaborate?

Well, I don't do tasting notes. But, in addition to the sweetness that put you off, the wine seemed to have a creaminess around the usual minerality that I usually identify with older Briords or--come to think of it--the Clissons.

Tasting notes not required, points even less so, but clearly you remembered enough to be able to compare the 12 to the 02 on release. I understand what you are saying about finding qualities in the 12 that you normally have to wait for; however, what I am wondering about is if the 12 has a density or, if you will, a concentration not to be found in the past decade worth of Briords, if not longer. I don't usually value concentration as much as balance for longevity, but having gone way back with Marc's wines on multiple occasions, I do see advantages of ageing the more concentrated versions, particularly since balance is pretty much a given every year.

1998 Georg Breuer Nonnenberg Rauenthal Rheingau 12.0%, served chilled, was just awesome last night, skating its way to a gold medal in the Sochi of my buds.

Recently of note:

My last bottle of 1995 Caprai 25 Anni was incredible. Finally, it was everything I was hoping it could be. EXPLOSIVE nose of flowers, mint, and red fruits. All sorts of other things around the edges and off to the side. Still fairly structured, so i imagine many of you might think it should be aged longer, not me. It was in a perfect sweet spot of refinement and vigor.

Another great bottle of 2007 Salina syrah Heintz Vineyard. Snappy, leathery, herby with silky fruit underneath everything and carrying all the way through the wine. We have a really hard time selling this wine, which is a shame because it is as good as any syrah made in the US and competitive with some of my favorites from France.

Keeping with repetition, I had another great bottle of 2011 Mugneret Chaignots. Supple, silky, herbal blue fruits. Conveys an impression of cool temperature, which is a neat trick. When it's this delicious, why wait? Am I right, .sasha?

Kenny Likitprakong was in town, so I had a few chances to taste through most of his wines. I love them and you ought to try them, but to highlight just one that you can't miss, the 2012 Hobo Sceales grenache. The vines from Alexander Valley are almost 100 years old and are dry farmed organically. Kenny used about 70% whole cluster in 2012. Where the 2011 was gentle spice and fruit, this is earthier, deeper and more brooding, but without sacrificing a lightness of being, for lack of a better phrase. No jamminess, no heaviness. This is the real fucking deal.

Had my first full bottle of Ceritas, the 2011 Porter-Bass chardonnay. Dense and firm, like a wire fence holding in rocks and yellow fruits. Really fantastic wine with the structure and texture of a world class wine. I've ordered some of their pinot noir, so we'll see if they do as well with that grape as they do with chardonnay. 12.9% alcohol, FWIW.

Wednesday night I had dinner with someone who may be familiar to folks here from days of yore, John Sprow. He's looking to move to the area, which is great news for me. I've been forcing New CA wines at him and on Wednesday it was the Arnot-Roberts Trousseau. This is a delightful little wine, brambly, spicy and fragrant. Softer than you would get from the Jura, but not less expensive. Of course, this is the first of our New CA wines to sell out because people are fucking sheep. Time is a flat circle.

Was this the '12? The '11 didn't float my boat (and sheep-like I bought a decent amount of it), but this was a nice return to form I thought.

Vieux Telegraphe 1981-1988 last night. Yup, all 8 vintages.

6 of the wines were very, very good to utterly fantastic. The only one that showed some considerable over-the-hillness was the '85. However, it still hadn't lost some fruit sweetness. 1986 had a bit too much band-aid brett. 1984 and 1987 were a touch chunky and coarse compared to the ones I liked better, but I would be happy to drink either of those. 1981-3, and 1988 were totally amazing. Texture, complexity, finish. Completely seamless. Those four wines were the total package. By no means do they need to be drunk now.

02 Huet bubbly. So sad that this has faded so fast. My last two in the past 4-5 months have been so tired, I regret not drinking them up when they were as vibrant and delicious as they were 3-4 years ago. The downslide has really surprised me.

Yes, the 2012. Agree that it is better than the 2011. I hope I didn't undersell it, it is very good wine.

i have no particular desire to piss anyone off, but the message seems to be that i should consider this to be equivalent to a wine made to the exacting standards of a dude who spends every day in the vineyards imagining how a given season's grapes will turn into wine, and adjusting his vineyard practices accordingly.

yet in reward for my feats of imagination, i gets to pay twice the price.

i'm sure these guys are nice dudes. but no.

Chaignots '11 Michelot and Vosne '11 M-G are preventing me from approaching Chaignot M-G. That, and a minor technical obstacle of my Chaignot M-G not having arrived yet, although I drank from someone else's bottle in January.

Otherwise, yes.

But you and I caught the Vosne in slightly different states; I recall yours was reported to be closed, while mine was crazy phenolic and black fruity, but also transparent all at once, and I was having a psychedelic hybrid Loire/Burgundy experience.

so I actually don't know in what way the second bottling is different, except for anecdotal evidence, some first hand, that the first bottling remains quite fresh

what I do know is that when SFJoe and I visited in 2007, Pinguet claimed to be messing around with dosage, and pulled out an even later bottled, low dosage version, that proved to be disappointing - not only to us, but to him as well.

So, on the subject of 02 Huet Petillant Reserve. I bought one case, in two batches of six bottles apiece, about a year apart, from two different NYC retailers I trust. The first six bottles were purchased in late 2011. The second six bottles in late 2012. Am I right in assuming that the first six, which I have just recently finished consuming (and without a single instance of premox or tiredness), were from the first bottling, and the second six, which I have not yet begun to consume, are from the second bottling? If so, shit.

Michael, my last couple of disappointing bottles were the regular petillant, not the reserve. Didn't buy any of the reserve so can't comment.
