What did you drink tonight?

The other night, at Racines, a bottle of Foreau 1999 Vouvray Sec was gorgeous: vibrant acidity, apricot and saffron, rich Chenin texture. Nice match with the food, which was also excellent, especially the Oregon morels.

Nice to hear. Can't say I've ever had a good experience with the '99 given all the rot problems of the vintage. If you recall, it showed pretty poorly at the Foreau-a-thon.

Oregon morels, otoh, mmmmmmm.

I was going to mention that Brad's vintage chart would slam the '99s, but I thought I'd let him speak for himself.

You've enjoyed the '99s? Both Foreau and Huet have shown pretty poorly in my experience and I don't recall buying more than one bottle of Pinon.

Come to think of it, Joe, we had a '99 Huet Sec at your old place on release and you even commented on the rot issue for how poorly it showed.

It was a tough vintage for sure. But Brad, you are arguing your vintage chart against Jeff's recent experience with an actual bottle.

Exactly what was I arguing? I said I was glad he had a good experience with it when, based on my own experiences with the wine, which included a bottle with Jeff, it hasn't shown well.

Tonight a lovely bottle of 2012 Rebholz Kastanienbusch Riesling was a delightful and piercingly focused way to remain attentive to the slow prod of the World Cup victory.

I don't have much experience with Rebholz, but this showed a lot more elegance than the 2012 Im Sonnenschein and 2012 Ganz Horn Im Sonnenschein from the past few nights. And of course those weren't exactly inelegant.

We are, too. Nice juicy Knauß Trollinger 2012 with grilled shishito peppers, fresh sausages, eggplant, onions and sweet corn from the garden.

I remember that bottle; bleh.

I asked Arnaud first whether these bottles were drinking well, and, if not, to bring another Vouvray with some age on it.

Of course, I was drinking Vouvray because a certain wine femalllllle had drunk all the Cuvee Barricade.

I look at those Oregon morels the way a kid looks out the window of class waiting for recess. All that fun is out there, and here am I, stuck with my multiplication tables.

morels were scarce this year, at least around here

franck peillot's altesse ('12) is a hell of a wine, though

Ridge Lytton Springs 2008 from half bottle was made for the grilled ribeyes from Lilac Hedge Farm along with fresh-picked local corn and fresh tomato / basil / mozzarella / EVOO / balsamic. A decant in the glass while preparing dinner allowed the wine to expand to the moment.

clearly good karma, since the only goal of the game was scored by a swabian. we soothed our nerves with helmut dolde's brauner jura riesling 13, and toasted success with his schwarze birne 11.

Were any Brazilians drinking Argentine wine for any reason other than to curse their football team?

Yes, many were rooting for Argentina because they see them as brothers, of a sort. Among these, those not into self-flaggelation were drinking up older Montchenots, which can still be had for a song, since they are so unfashionable in Argentina.
