What did you drink tonight?

Last night the 2012 Puffeney Poulsard M was so easily delicious. It integrated very quickly and was so crisp and light but also so flavorful. Nice nice nice.

Earlier in the weekend I had my first exposure to 2012 La Clarine Sierra Foothills Sumu Kaw Syrah. I had heard so many good things and it was nice, although I didn't get bowled over. Lots of the distinctive olive aromas I associate with 'cool weather' syrah, although it was plenty dark and ripe and said 14.2% on the label. I took it to a party so didn't really study in depth, but look forward to more from the producer.

shit. forgot that. i must have been drinking or something.

fb.

A half dozen bottles of 11 Mas Champart Pays d'Oc in the past couple months. From the Saint-Chinian borderlands, ripe cabernet franc fruit and herbal, windy earth. Fascinating stuff. The 10 was good, too, like pepper-steak in a glass with its sizable portion of syrah. I think I like the mostly cabernet franc 11 version a little more mainly because it seems to express its origin so fully.

Company holiday party. "Tempranillo" which tasted like they filled a barrel with oak chips and poured the wine into any empty spaces that were left and "Sauvignon Blanc" which tasted like nothing on earth.

So you're saying that the SB tasted heavenly, Jay?

2011 Abbatucci Faustine Rouge was really delicious last night. Just a joyous, vibrant wine. I can't see it improving further, and it doesn't need to.

he may be claiming absolute detachment from soil, not previously achieved to the same extent

Hydroponic vines.

2012 Overnoy-Crinquand Arbois Pupillin Ploussard

Pale-red, almost orange. Big nose, strawberry-raspberry dominating other stuff. Reasonably plush texture, the initially sere tannins loosen with time to make a core of sour dirt. The wine's proportion and restraint made me think if Voltaire's little smile of reason, curiously. Good on its own, super with food.

2010 Bellivieres Jasnieres les Rosiers

Initial stink wafted away leaving a stellar Chenin-based wine, crystaline, full of energy and stoney punch. Raised a glass to Joe.

2013 Le Casot des Mailloles Blanc du Casot and 2013 Le Casot des Mailloles Poudre d'Escampette on consecutive nights. Failed to captivate, despite charming aromas.

Haven't drunk either but I like the 2013 Canta Mañana rosé a lot.

Exactly. Some Martian dust, mixed with Venusian sulphuric acid clouds and just a soupcon of methane showing distinct Jovian terroir.

2013 Henri Milan Papillon Rosé (sans soufre ajouté) VdF and 2012 Henri Milan Papillon Rouge (sans soufre ajouté) rated high on the quaffer scale.

Yes. More please. Light orange rind and salt. Not overly caramely. Really elegant and persistent. Another nice wine for the season and its spices.

2011 and 2012 Domaine de la Tournelle Trousseaus on consecutive evenings were quite the treats, bright and fresh, the 2011 just about bordering on perfection.
