2011 Regnie sur Granit, Maison P-U-R
This was darker-frooted than other Beaujolais I've had from these guys. That's not a bad thing, it was just surprising. Well-balanced. Another year or so will bring the elements (fruit/tannin/acidity) into harmony.

2001 Chinon, Dom. Les Roches
After trying a bummer bottle a month ago (VERY weedy, almost no fruit), it was nice that the final bottle from my stash was right on the money. Seamless and complex. Sure, one could hold onto this for another year, but why bother?

word wise, i've been a bit tied down with the day job, tbh. plus there's the a small matter of expanding the southern frontier of greater swabia in the coming week.

Jed Steele's 2009 "Stymie" Lake County Merlot. Stymie is a small lot selection he does with sundry varieties, seemingly when the mood and quality strikes. Rich and round, without being overripe and cloying (alcohol 13.9% on label), with some tobacco-oak-herbal complexity, the flavor straddles suave Pomerol and plump Paso Robles. Pretty impressive for Lake County Merlot.

2010 Rust en Vrede Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch SA.

Frequenting my fave winebar downtown, I was surprised to find this bottle had just been opened. This winery has always turned out some nice wines in my book and good prices too.

Dark purple with a reddish purple rim. Floral, brambly nose and a hint of green pepper that one can find in SA reds. Medium-bodied and tannic with a hint of newish oak? Cherry, plum, tobacco, some mineral tones. Needs more bottle age I think to really show its stuff.
$28 on the shelf at DeVines close by. Think I am tempted to try Allesverloren next.

Anything in particular that makes Breton stand out for you in comparison to Foillard? Texturally and flavor-wise, they offer many of the same pleasures to me, except that I get more joy on both dimensions from Foillard.

Unless Breton is just too sneaky...
