What did you drink tonight?

Tonight, the 1989 La Rioja Alta Rioja Viña Ardanza Reserva was really well-knit, smooth but a little zesty on the back, with alluring leather, red fruit and moderate weight. On the simple side, until I added a grilled ribeye to the mix, and it started to shine. Definitely $25 well spent.

Highlights were a 1995 Allemand Reynard, a XXVII lapierre and a thankfully un premoxed 2001 Trimbach fredreric Emile.

2002 Huet Le mont demi sec was premoxed.

2010 Cowan Cellars Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir tonight was a Wow kinda wine with some crispy roast duck and crepes to belatedly celebrate Chinese New Year. It has a Californian sense of fruit while at the same time maintaining a Burgundian sense of restraint. Jean proclaimed it a wheelhouse wine for her, no faint praise.

I had a similar experience encountering this wine by the glass at Arlequin last spring - a sort "this wine has no business being this good" sensation.

Thanks for the reminder, ipton

Lots of good wines today. Allemand the wine of the day. The 1972 Corton was fun. Curious that the 2011 Boxler Riesling Brand left me wanting, perhaps my fave Alsatian producer. The 2002 Valentini Cerasuolo was pretty damn good as was that 1996 Peyre Rose. The Peter Hahn Vouvray wines were quite interesting to try. The Trimbach has held up tonight to allow me to write the kind of tasting note which adds no value. All lists of flavors and textures. Who the fuck cares.

2007 Oekonomierat Rebholz Weisser Burgunder Spaetlese trocken.
Had almost forgotten how good Pinot Blanc can be. This was fragrant and light and just demanded to be drunk in quantity. Unfortunately my last bottle.

Once again showed why one better waits a few years before drinking the Rebholz wines. While I liked the wine from the beginning this was the most exciting bottle of the case.

1999 Elio Grasso Runcot Barolo was drinking really well last night. Paired well with pork chop, fregola, broccoli rabe.
i think this wine might see more oak or exposure to barrique that his other Barolo doesnt get. But it had integrated well over the years.

2007 L'Anglore Tavel Rosé, 'twas brillig and the slithy toves, did gyre and gimble in the wabe; all mimsy were the borogoves, and the mome raths outgrabe.

I must say that other people were drinking a bottle of '07 Vouette & Sorbée Fidèle last night, but that I could have done the job without their help.

So good, that.

It should be evident to anyone with more sense than a baby that I was stringing the helmsy in the ware.

I guessed something like would be happening. In your absence, i opened the '09 Boloree (dsg 4/13); figured you'd be happy there is one fewer bottle on the planet. It was beautiful, if a bit more lush than the '08. The '62 Rinaldi, was uniformly pleasing. maybe even more than that.

Ah, but you already know that Weiß(er)burgunder is a whole 'nother wine from Pinot Plonk. And far from only Rebholz (although all his wines are something special).
