What did you drink tonight?

Tonight was water but yesterday was a pleasant surprise as the 07 L D'Or went very well with a tuna steak seasoned with lime and fennel powder. I was worried the wine would be too weak for the meaty fish, but it all danced along brilliantly. And the wine was brilliant.

Andi Knauss 2011 Altenberg R (Merlot, Zweigelt, Lemberger).
Drinky, cool and elegant. Made even watching the Super Bowl bearable.

2000 François Cazin (Le Petit Chambord) Cour Cheverny hopelessly oxidized, 1998 Hermann Dönnhoff Norheimer Kirschheck Riesling Spätlese Nahe totally lovely and an argument for ageing Dönnhoff, 2010 ArPePe Rosso di Valtellina still boisterous and disjointed, but should attain the pinosity desired (by me, at least) in such nebbiolos.

02 L d'Or - perfect. best bottle of this I've had.

Louis Magnin 10 Arbin Mondeuse - really nice. not about fruit at all, lovely minerals and earth. let it breathe for a while or simply wait to open.

Henri Prudhon 08 Rouges-Gorges Saint Aubin - crunchy and lovely. the tannins are wonderful and with air the pretty red fruits arrive. in a great place right now.

Lapierre 10 Morgon - fruity and yummy.

Navarre Pineau de Charentes Rose - delicious. great fruit and really balanced suger, though at this time of the evening i was a bit too tired....

I must say that other people were drinking a bottle of '07 Vouette & Sorbée Fidèle last night, but that I could have done the job without their help.

So good, that.

I guessed something like would be happening. In your absence, i opened the '09 Boloree (dsg 4/13); figured you'd be happy there is one fewer bottle on the planet.

Your kindness is boundless!

In praise of left over wineThe left over 1/2 glass of '96 croix boisee from last night is still excellent tonight.

How did the rest of the bottle show? I only have a couple left and want to use appropriately. It's a tricky wine to get right.

I find the '95 tricky, but not the '96. I thought the '96 was in a great place, and feel neither rushed nor relaxed about drinking the rest of mine. Soonish, but no panic.

The 1995 was tricky, for sure. Thanks.

Last night, while watching a tragi-comedy about football, I had a Kamikaze. Probably for the first time in 20 years and certainly for the first time not out of a shot glass at 2 in the morning and you know, with fresh squeezed lime, it's really a pretty nice drink.

Had a lovely bottle of 2011 Cazin Cour-Cheverney Vendanges Manuelles, shockingly approachable and easy going. Delicious.

From the archives: 1997 Clos Roche-Blanche gamay is just remarkable. Pretty fruit, lots of earth and flowers, delicate texture, long in the mouth. Probably paid $8 for this. Not just still alive, it's thriving. A wine I can't stop thinking about. Pulled a '98 as well for later.
