What did you drink tonight?

5 days later the 2012 Zilliken Rausch Auslese was still going strong.

what did you expect, The Orange Revolution?

All this week: Brovia 2010 Nebbiolo d'Alba "Valmaggione" which is crisp and light and pure, emphasizing rose and Juicy-Fruit gum scents. It was muted on opening, very fragrant about 6 hours later, and since then just steadily typique. A little much at $35 (but I've paid more and gotten less for other wines).

Speaking of ChardonnayTonight's wine for me with dinner is Berreche Les Beaux Regards. 2009 fruit, disgorged December 2012. For this blancs de noirs guy, this is a blanc de blanc that I'd happily drink any time. Bone dry finish but generous on the tongue. Not as intriguingly spicy as a recent Lemble, but better cut and length. I'd like to cellar some of these.
A bottle last month was pleasurable but really closed. Loved all the 2008s from Bereche with an additional year in bottle, so I am being patient with the rest of the 2009s.

I sure don't think of Rhys as a gamble. Those guys are carving their wines out of solid rock.

The intent is clearly good. I wish my few examples had been more persuasive.
I have had good luck from the ''08 vintage forward with the pinots.
The 2010 horseshoe Vnyd. Syrah is remarkable.
And recent barrel tastes of reds, unpredictable as they are, were pretty compelling.
I know little of the chards.
Best, Jim
I agree that the pinots are much stronger from about the 2008 vintage forward. I find the tannins and texture of the wines more appealing compared to the early vintages. Although I think the 2004 Home is kind of an outlier among the early wines.

Also agree that the syrahs are excellent and seem to be improving with each year.

I'm mixed on the chardonnays. I've liked the Alpine, but so far have preferred it young. I think I've realized the Horseshoe isn't for me.

Last night, 2007 Benetiere Dolium. Utterly astonishing.

Astonishing that you were able to find a bottle, too. I've never seen that available anywhere. One barrel, according to Polaner's web site.

Just a delightful producer, one bottle better than the next.

Isn't there some story about how Guigal keeps trying to buy this parcel, which is apparently surrounded by Guigal holdings on all sides, and Benetiere refuses each time despite higher and higher offers?

I have a bottle of the 2007 buried deep somewhere, also hand-carried back from Paris. Never tasted it, but I am a fan of the Cordeloux, which is finally being imported starting with the 2010 vintage.

Hand-carried back from Paris.

Good choice. Not too many great bottles in Paris that are simply unavailable in the States, but this is one. I hope you chased it down with Houillon Vin Jaune.

I'm having a Scotch, but my menu celebrates the availability of

"Beaujolais Villages Combe aux Jacques, France Plumy.

summer red; a classic bubblegum-scented and residual sugar than most of its kind [sic]."

What could be better than that?

(Though in truth I don't remember much rs in horrible Beaujolais.)

I'm beginning to worry about you.

Panzer also offered a small amount of the Dolium, too, if I recall correctly.

Dug out some bottles of 1995 Marsanny Ouzeloy from Roty that Ms. Nelson convinced me to buy perhaps a dozen years ago and that sat in my locker until now and were both great in the past week.
