Howard Camhi was in town last night, so I hosted a small get together. We drank the '11 Domaine des Malandes- Chablis Mont de Mileu, '07 Raveneneau- Chablis Butteaux, '08 Foreau- Vouvray Demi-sec, '10 Domaine des Varoilles- Givrey Chambertin Champonnet, '64 CVNE- Rioja Reserva Especial and '89 Prunotto- Barolo Cannubi. All showed beautifully.

Cassoulet at Kessler's last night. Betty Lu's cassoulet is always a treat, but last night every one of us at the table remarked on how extraordinarily wonderful it was, so focussed and integrated, and delicious. Paired with '98 Beaucastel which was lithe and fresh, and seemed a perfect match. Followed by '01 Vieux Donjon, also really good.
 
2009 Baudry Franc de Pied I liked better as a young wine with more exuberant fruit. It was tasty Thursday, but I'd rather drink the Clos Guillot even at it's early stage of development. I know others like to age this wine, I just really don't see why.

2006 Rougeard Clos was fantastic. Velvety but with structure humming underneath. Not in a prime drinking window by any means, but I've found the Clos (abd Bourg for that matter) are usually fun to drink at almost any age. The Poyeux is trickier.

2011 Vatan Chavignol on Friday was crème de calcaire if there was such a thing. Really improved over the course of the evening suggesting a bit more time in the cellar would do it good, but I wouldn't count on this for old bones. Chavignol is the only sauvignon really worth drinking.
 
2002 Léoville Barton was all fruit for an hour and then calmed down into a nice, light in the mouth Bordeaux. Good acidity, some density, soft tannin, very drinkable right now but not profound.

The cork, though, was top quality. When these things work out there is nothing better.

I've had nothing tonight, but a lurker has been testing the limitations of my bandwidth, employing all known methods of communications from semaphore to Morse code, exalting the virtues of 2010 Rollin Pernand-Vergelesses.
 
Tonight is an experiment: Far Niente 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that has been meh for many years. At age 20 it has finally made it up to OK: still plenty vigorous, with years to go, ripe fruit but not overripe, just nothing much else to it (no there there, as they say).

the village pernand from rollin is, for me, one of the better deals in burgundy.

To me, the best thing about them was always the label. It's been more than a few years since I've tried one, though.

I won 8 of them at auction on March 22, 2000. There are 4 left.
 
Cotes Frontonnais "la folle noire d'ambat" NV? from Le Roc - quite dark; medium aroma with slight reduction, thyme-sage notes on cherry-blood orange fruit; curious combination of medium-light body and grippy texture on palate, vigorous acidity, medium-light but distinctly dry and slightly bitter tannins, more of that blood orange-cherry fruit. Odd but entertaining combo of dry/bitter and quaffable. 100% Negrette.

Pinot Blanc Alto Adige Thurner 2012, Colterenzio-Shreckbichl - vigorous fresh grapy-appley aroma with a hint of lees; fresh, lively intense palate, very clean and minerally fruit with good acid and persistence, good length. A single note but beautifully played.
 
2012 Brun l'Ancien VV: fresh, crunchy, and limpid, if you can say that of a red. First bottle in several months, and rewarding the wait.

2012 Huet Bourg sec: like the first bottle, kind of meh on its own, fussy and charmless, but exceptionally good with salty food: in this case scampi one night and vegetarian moo shu the next.

Kay, is the 02 Barton drink and hold?
