What did you drink tonight?

2008 Chave Saint-Joseph was a bit reticent olfactorywise, but the gullet was quite lovely. Salil mentioned oak in a CT review from 2012, but it's all gone.

Is this the Domaine bottling? There used to be two - Domaine and Offerus, but I hear there are even more now.

Yes, the domaine bottling. Out of prejudice, have been avoiding the Offerus, though perhaps I shouldn't.

After an early less-than-salutary experience with Offerus, I too have steered clear. I've read some very positive notes on later vintages, but haven't taken the time to search it out.

2003 Ganevat Vignes de Mon Pere, in Cercie of all places.

2009 Gonon St-Jospeh Blanc 'Les Oliviers', in Meursault of all places.

2003 Faiveley Clos de la Marechale. Not bad.

Nursing a glass of 2011 Desvignes Cote du Py now.

Plenty of Chamonard Morgon as well - 1997, 2003, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013 (not yet bottled).

And also Dutraive, Coquelet, Thevenet, Valette, bla bla bla.

Last night was 2004 Trevallon, the only interloper in a pretty nice line-up with comrade Brezeme.

How was the 04 Trévallon? A friend down here has a bottle and was wondering how much more to wait.

The 2004 Trevallon is still young, at least from the domaine. Our bottle bounced around a bit and was more open. Quite classic.

2003 Ganevat is good now, too tight. I thought it was much better from barrel, and am slightly disappointed, to be honest.

2011 Desvignes Cote du Py is very good in the warm style. The Javernieres climat is being extensively replanted after the death of many vines in 2012.

2002 Pascal Cotat Le Monts Damnes makes a Damnes good argument for cellaring these wines. The nose has picked up a honeyed character, but on the palate it's got plenty of crispness and verve to it (with an almost paradoxical weight at the same time). World class stuff and great with salmon.

2012 Lauer Barrel X, not quite Immich CAI level, but pretty damn delicious.

2012 Darting Riesling Durkheimer Nonnengarten Kabinett was also delicious the other night when it was hot and a bit stuffy. At $18 a liter, I'll be drinking a ton of this over the summer.

'06 Nik Steiner hund 12.5% alcohol and singing. The label says dry, but it seems to me that there is a touch of RS, not just very ripe fruit. Whatever. It is a gorgeous young wine.

20o8 Vollenweider krover steffensberg auslese; 7.5 abv (ap 07 09). Still very primary, but a nice savory finish. I keep coming back for more. Kaleidoscopic in the mouth ( if I can mix those senses) . Drink. Hold. Drink. Hold.

great night tonight...

'04 Briords - minerals minerals minerals
'05 Clisson - holy shit...HOLY SHIT.
'11 L'Anglore Sels d'Agent
'12 L'Anglore Tavel - didn't produce fireworks for me...lots of radish, and veggie notes. very good.
'02 Baudry Franc de Pied - amazing aromatics. wine is slimmed down, elegant and profound.
'03 Baudry Franc de Pied - Rougeard doppelganger
'05 CRB Cot - best value on the menu. drinking perfectly.
'53 Huet Le Mont Molleux - liked this a lot

Racines was fantastic for this out of towner. food was spot on, service was fantastic and the wine list is just about perfect.

Hot damn, Matt. Sounds like that more than made up for your bad travel karma.

Some of you (Sasha?) might recall my disillusionment with Pinot Gris as a grape. Holger Koch's Grauburgunder was put forth as a counterexample of the genre. Tonight, with braised pork tenderloin, we opened the 2011 Holger Koch Grauburgunder*** which, as advertised, was light and lithe, quite enjoyable with no honeyed heaviness about it. And yet... we found that the lack of aromaticity characteristic of this grape tempers our enthusiasm. Given a choice, I'll take Pinot Blanc hands down, so we'll broach his Weissburgunder in due time.

I usually have the same feelings about Pinot Gris, but was amazed by the Eyrie 2012 the last two times I had it.

I checked with the Rabbi, Mark.
"Oy", he said after lengthy contemplation, "there is probably a time and a place for every grape!"

If you could ask your Rabbi for the precise time and place for that wine, I'll note it down for future reference. If he refuses to be pinned down, we'll just have to try it at that hypothetical dinner at Racine's.

Matt, how did you find this in terms of maturity?

I had a rather disappointing bottle a couple of months back at Le Mary Celeste that was very much over the hill and entering generic red wine territory. I wondered about provenance and badly want to believe other bottles are in better shape.
