What did you drink tonight?

1999 Pierre Savoye Morgon Cote du Py Cuvée Speciale Fût de Chêne is heading over the hill. Always worried about the wood astringency versus the fruit from this vintage and I think the wood is prevailing. Better on day two, but still. Hints of iron and drying tannin against plum fruit. 3 prongs. The '96 version of this same wine is in fine shape. A 2007 Vieilles Vignes drunk recently showed quite woody(!) with light fruit. The VV was always the wine here and aged well even in tough vintages but I just can't get behind the '07. Very surprised to find it marked by wood.

1990 Juliusspital Iphofer Julius-Echter-Berg Rieslaner Auslese. In a really good spot now, with a bit of that aged Rieslaner earthiness and acidity that refuses to go away. 14.5% ABV, too, so you're getting plenty of drunkenness for your buck.

Texier Cote du Rhone 2011: is there a more cheeful, good-hearted, easy-drinking red? Maybe l'Ancien.

Leoville Barton 2002: Very nice, formerly blanketing tannins now in knife-edge counterpoise with acidity, fruit peeking out from behind the door.

Also tried a hitherto unknown Muscadet source, newly imported by our local Williams Corner Wines: Jeremie Huchet and Jeremie Mourat, vignerons. Opened a 2004 Gorges, which was tight on Sunday, but starting to round out nicely last night. The Jeremies also bottle wine made from vineyards in Clisson, Thébaud, and Goulaine, plus a non-lieu-dit, all of which I hope to try in due course. WCW is busy in NY these days, so these wines may be available up there now.

2011 Ganevat Grands Teppes VV. Serious stuff and a pretty good impersonation of white burgundy. Minerals and some fruit on the nose. Very rich mouthfeel but even more prominent acidity. Feels like a big wine but it's not flabby. The texture and acidity are so big it is not easy to drink right now (took me a good hour to finish a glass) but there's a lot of aging potential here and notwithstanding the tarrif I'm thinking about buying some more and revisiting it in a few years.

Very surprised and not especially pleased to hear this given the vintage. I had a bottle on tap for the near future. Maybe I should just put it away and cross my fingers.

Jay, the wine was astringent but this is only one sample. Could have been an off night. Seemed woody though, which surprised me.

Please carry one with your plan and drink the bottle.

and when in Cologne?

so much drier and more textural than any Arneis I'd had previously. Really precisely articulated floral aromatics, and chalky, nervy flavor profile. Just way more spine than I remember from any previously drunk rendition of this grape. A treat.

Jay, the current edition of their vinified Gewurztraminer is the best I can recall from them. It is substantially more appealing than 95% of what comes out of Alsace.

I've been wanting to place another order with them but I just have so much wine...

My story, too, but Jean placed the order, thereby relieving me of the responsibility.
