What did you drink tonight?

ducroux rose esquisse 2013 was pretty damn weird when i opened it. es tut mir leid. i put it aside for cooking. but then it kept spitting its stopper, so i stuck it in the fridge. a week later, the fermentation finished, it is strangely compelling. i reclassify from cook to drink.

in stark contrast to a recent 86, 2000 poujeaux is spoofy. i reclassify from drink to cook.

its replacement -- 97 cantemerle -- is a quiet testament to marginal climate, terroir and honest mainstream winemaking. only just ripe, it accompanies some iberico chops and chanterelles with dignity, restraint and an attractive mix of fruit, veg and brett.

finally, marco zani's castel noarna 2012 remains perhaps the most compelling advertisement for nosiola that i've encountered. while this wine is not actually drinking as well as the 11 (let alone, i'm told, the legendary 10), the balance between fruit, phenolics and acidity makes it the perfect wine for a long night in alone for this fat guy.

other's mileage will, of course, vary.

Excellent. Not surprisingly, it doesn't have the complexity of a good vintage older HBB, but it is damn good. No premox. Seemingly many years ahead of it, but it probably isn't going to get much better.

2012 Bedrock Papera Ranch Heritage. 60% Zinfandel, 40% Carignane, RRV. Frooty and big. But not truly simple. Perhaps one of Morgan's better efforts. He is my swell pal and I buy to try, not always loving the results as much as, say, your average Berserker might.

Well done within its idiom, an idiom I do enjoy more than your average Disorderly.

'Nuff said.

Is there really an average disorderly?

Two nights ago, jeebing locally, a selection that might please your average disorderly, or an average among disorderly palates:

2007 Pierre Frick Pinot Blanc Alsace 13.0%
2006 Pierre Frick Riesling Grand Cru Steinert Alsace 13.0%
1999 Pierre Frick Riesling Vendages Tardives Alsace 13.0%
1996 Ch“teau d’Epiré Savennières 13.0%
2011 Yvon Métras Beaujolais 12.0%
2007 Jules Desjournais Moulin-à-Vent 12.0%
1998 Domaine Chamonard Morgon Le Clos de Lys 12.5%
1997 Giacomo Bologna Barbera d’Asti Ai Suma 14.0%
2009 Bernard van Berg "Le Vin Le Plus Simplement" Bourgogne Grand Ordinaire 12.0%
2005 Anne Gros Vosne-Romanée Les Barreaux 13.0%
1998 Anne Gros Vosne-Romanée Les Barreaux 13.0%

The Barbera was served blind as a lark and everyone guessed new world. The two Anne Gros were mediocre at best. The van Berg is a bit of a unicorn (Belgian photographer, pledges to never chaptalize, one of less than 300 bottles), was quite frooty and clear. Desjournais new to me, and pretty special. The Epiré was more reminiscent of Joly that I would have liked. The last few 98 Chamonards have had a rubbery note that didn't go away even on evening two. Fricks all interesting in different ways and the Métras the usual delight.

How so?

Oxidized?

No, more to do with a certain fatness, when I was hoping it would be leaner and more minerally. The fruit was regal, but a bit plodding, when I needed a dancer after the Fricks.

That said, this was my first Kermit Epiré with the requisite age, and expectations had been set high by the book. Should revisit a Papillon to recalibrate Savennières bearings, but only have 04s, suspect are not ready.

98 Bouissiere Gigondas. Beefy boy. Sediment started showing up in glass in last third of bottle, and it had stood for a while.

Oswaldo, did your D'Epire have the Cuvee Speciale designation? That's the one I've had that's shown to be rather oxidized at this point.

I don't know if you can really calibrate based on those two wines. And I don't think of Papillon as 'standard' Savennieres. Although I could be wrong. That said, I'm not sure what you would use.

Whoops. Just noticed you said Kermit, so that is indeed the Cuvee Speciale.

The remaining half of the bottle will be experienced tonight, so I'll report back on this particular aspect.
