better & better'08 Marie Courtin "Efflorescence" Extra Brut; 100% pinot noir. I can't get enough of this wine.

It's amazing. Try it with caviar....

I imagine that would be nice too; i've drunk about a case of the '08, almost all of it without food.

2011 Hubert Lignier Bourgogne Pinot Noir - yet another 2011 that I am truly enjoying young, the first red burgundy vintage that I am able to drink at this early stage without guilt; lovely secondary complexity out of the blocks with a transparency to match

1997 Pascal Cotat Monts Damnés had a not-snug-enough cork and was oxidized, so we pretended it was non-ouillé savagnin and in that guise it past mustard.

"passed muster", unless you're offering a hot yellow flavor descriptor

Jeff??Who has taken over Jeff's account? And what have they done with him?
We have assumed control.

China trip was great (though not from the vinous perspective). Highest of the highlights: a visit to the Jhokang Temple in Lhasa. Incense, pilgrims, prostration, monks, Buddhas and bodhisattvas, yak butter, and the urgent care of this life and the next.

2013 Laurent Saillard "La Pause" Gamay Just off the boat and a bit reductive on opening but cleans up with some air. Showing great promise and will be wonderful in a few weeks.

2012 Broc Cellars "Vine Starr" Zinfandel Showing and drinking much more refined than the previous bottle I had. Less Languedoc and more Loire. Scrumptious.

Tournelle 2010 Chardonnay "Terre de Gryphees" had nice texture but was excessively sour. Into the fatsink.

is a fatsink the same thing as John Gilman's crachoir à la russe?

steady. we are talking about an old old acquaintance here.

speaking of which, jaugueyron 2007 and 2009 reveal the different sides of old acquaintances tonight. the former is puppy dog friendly, but very much rewarding for it. the latter is more reticent. it takes time to get to know. for me the extra effort is justified.

jochen beurer's schilfsandstein 2012 is a nice mixture of both. a gift that keeps on giving. nuff said.

see? barely the slightest mention of regnie. which wouldn't have fit with this crowd anyway.

fb.

A sadly too old Giovaninni Moresco Pajoré 1974; a good Dönhoff Hermanshölle Spätlese Trocken 2000; and a great nose, not so great mouth Voge vv 06. Finished with a rancio from Priorat, Cal Piró, a 28º beast with +60 years in cask
