What did you drink tonight?

Friday night, the second of three 1997 Pascal Cotat Mont Damnées received last week and purchased last year also showed oxidized. Both corks did gyre and wimble in the wabe (i.e., gyrated in the bottleneck in the midst of corkscrew insertion, never an auspicious sign). Most disappointing to the palate with high hopes and the wallet with no hopes at all.

Happened upon a 90 Domaine de Trevallon which I had stashed away in my cellar. Time had been very kind to this particular bottle and definitely rated out as a "damn that's good". My notes say 50% cab & 50% syrah. Wondering is that Domaine still around?

Yes. Beaune Imports has represented them in CA for quite some time.

2008 Drouhin Chambolle-Musigny.
Classic.
2012 Bourgogne "Chaumes des Perriers" Dupont-Fahn
Definitely above paygrade

Grandpa's mistake is our benefit

oh, is this the story about some dude dropping mulch from home depot garden section onto a meursault vineyard? I've forgotten. Please remind.

p.s. I was far less fond of 2010 auxey rouge later in the day, although it did improve during the course of england - italy game, going from annoyingly sweet to pleasantly tart

Yup added topsoil some 40 years ago when they re-grafted. It was approved by the INAO but the neighbors complained and successfully petitioned the AOC declassification.

Brought a bottle to a restaurant and it was very oxidized. I didn't open it so I can't report on the cork but I did bring it home and pour it down my corked fatsink (tm).

After telling Coad last night that this would be the summer of Savennieres, we opened 96 Epire tonight hoping for the best. Pleased to report the bottle was in good shape. Dark stoniness, almonds, a whiff of turpentine, rich texture. Thinking man's chenin.

Bummer. Do you have more? I have one more, and feel an urge to mercy kill it soon. Or perhaps I can sell it on Winebid with Brad's 02 Huets.

Those aren't mine, Oswaldo. I'm, stupidly, still paying for storage on my five cases.

I have two left and will have a substitute ready.

Pascal Moulin-a-Vent 2005. A couple of these have been deliciously open, a couple flawed, and several hard to read. This bottle started off thin and weedy the first night. As with the the 05 Vissoux Poncie from last week, however, on the second night, it showed very fine, with Burgundy-like transparency and lift, accompanying the ruddier, slightly grittier Beaujolais flavor profile. Like Lays potato chips, one sip leads to the next. Drink now with 1-2 hours decanting, or hold a few more years.

I've read about gamay 'pinoter'-ing, but haven't found much myself to compare in the flavors of wines made from these two varieties, even with age. I am finding convergence in the body-texture blend, though - a pleasant discovery, because it's largely this characteristic what draws me to red Burgundy. The more older Beaujolais I try, the better value I discern, even the newly fashionable, $35-40 'super-premium' bottles.

Dom. Hudelot-Noellat 2011 Bourgogne Rouge - Day 1: too intense, unpleasantly forceful and plasticky nose, rough red fruits; Day 2: all different! lightweight texture, acidity may not be any sharper but it's well-balanced and more noticeable, flavor profile drifting back towards raspberry-ness; Day 3: like Day 2 but showing additional citrussy complexity
