What did you drink tonight?

Actually, an older German friend of mine smirked when I brought one in to the byob he works at. Said his grand father used to drink that producer. Rolled his eyes and walked away.

I've just been disappointed with these and wondered why no one posted about them here.
Sorry to hear about these wines. I bought 3 bottles but haven't opened any yet.

I looked at them but (apparently fortunately) was in one of my short "I'm not buying wine!" phases when they came out.

I have an obvious bias since I found them and wrote the sordid tale that Oswaldo linked to so I apologize for the spam, but I've had more good experiences with the wines than poor. Certainly there's some bottle variation and I've had both horrendously corked bottles and ones with a persistent non-TCA mustiness. Good examples of both the Kabinett Trocken and the Spätlese have developed nicely over a few nights open, though. They're not the most wildly complex and intricate Rieslings in the world, but they're also not priced like those that are.

I'm going to revisit them tonight. I just haven't found any complexity in the few I've opened.

Mine arrive on town next week, I'm curious about them--perhaps more so after reading these sets of notes. There's a set of flavors that I love about aged Riesling, but at the price points involved I dont know that I'm expecting Schaefer.

Two very nice wines with lamb chop and venison entrees at The Boarding House. Thanks to Dr. Charles for spotting the first one on this interesting list at "challenging" price points.

D. Ventura, Pena do Lobo, Riberia Sacra 2012 ($40) - opened and poured, it needed time in the glass to open up but was fresh, complex - my first experience with Mencia and quite a good one.

Red Car, Sonoma Coast Syrah, 2010 ($70) - decanted and needed it, beautiful nose, not terrifically complex but became more so with time. Well made but needs time.

2006 C&P Breton Chinon Beaumont was boisterous (despite the meager 12%) tar baby, more than a trifle unsubtle, all in all more sediment than sentiment.

joel rochette beaujolais villages nouveau 13 is appealingly grapey, barely elevaged, sauvagey nonesense that is also far better than all of the fancy commercial swill i've been exposed to on my many recent travels. i file under "who knew? / ought to have known."

andi knauß riesling s 12 is fob and fattastic tonight. pulled stright from teh box from teh bowels of teh plane. and drunk at room temp.

it reminds me that drinking swabian riesling chilled is for fools. do it at room temperature once in your life - it won't be the last.

2002 Coudert Tardive last night exceeded my expectations. Fruit had receded some, as it should, but the wine was still fresh, opening up over a couple of hours before disappearing.

Did you do anything to the RG Rio Zappes other than cook them up in a pot with the usual aromatics? I am thinking about what to do with a bag of them sitting in my pantry.

pearl morissette cuvée lpr 13. cab franc saignée with a bit of chard and gamay, unsulphured and generally unfucked with. lithe and lively in the mouth, this has an appealing bitter twist in the finish. for me, an honest rose / light red that one can drink by the bathload without having to worry that one will hear that it tried to fingerbang someone in the cab on the way home afterwards.

'11 chardonnay is beautifully balanced now, and '11 cab franc is really opening up in the finish in a way oh not so unfamiliar should one get off the train in tours and go in a random direction.

but '13 gamay is also distinctly disorderly

i need to play with '09 chardonnay over 3-4 days, i still have a bottle at home; it's a richer, more backward style, with the texture owing more to old wood (or so it seems), so no way i am getting into a cab with this one

13 gamay is a unicorn. an utterly delightful wine to drink, yet apparently one that can't go out in public without constantly engaging in lewd and inappropriate conversation with those of a more delicate grasp on reality.

we should all be thankful that it is in quarantine.

These were done up with a few fresh (or slightly dried) Brazil chile peppers (tiny yellow things that are citrusy and very hot) and cooked in a mix of the soaking water and turkey and duck stocks from our new local whole animal, grass raised, sustainable butcher (Hudson & Charles-- I can't recommend them highly enough for anyone in the area). Otherwise just the usual: carrot, onion, arbol, garlic, and fresh thyme.

so that's why '13 g isn't being released yet - when they say finishing the wine, they mean finishing school

Vollenweider Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling Kabinett 2005 a.p.nr. 2 576 801 01 06 is just beginning to shed the baby fat at age 9 and will still be doing so at age 15. Great match for pimentón tilapia with roasted warm potato salad.
