What did you drink tonight?

I can't thank the vulgar petite simian enough for introducing me to the wines of Kenny Likitprakong. Tonight's selection was the 2013 Hobo Wine Company Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley. A delightfully drinkable wine at 12.9% alcohol, with red currant and cranberry accented by a dash of spice and a touch of vanilla, held together and focused by supple tannin leading to a mouth-watering tart finish. And it's a great value to boot.

Hear, hear.

1996 Chateau De Fieuzal Bordeaux Blanc - first pour seems hopeless, sour and certainly dead. A half hour later the patients condition begins to stabilize and soon there is a detectible pulse of tropical fruit. The texture is beautiful, there are lactic and coconut flavors carried by starfruit and the finish is soft, seamless and quite mineral though ultimately the wine is more curious than satisfying today. Good match with salt cod and potatoes but honestly, Chris, what isn't?

Also open: 2013 Joseph Drouhin Macon-Lugny, a $9 bottle of chardonnay from France. Very appealing, solidly in the realm of pears, crisp and taught, though short on the finish. Blessedly dry. Sulfites are showing a bit and one pour is enough for this oversensitive consumer.

2005 Luneau-Papin L d'Or, very nice, elegant and poised with age, well-integrated. Starts with a note eliciting prem'ox anxiety, which passes with a bit of air time.

Pepiere 2005 "Granite de Clisson" - was in-between, neither a zingy stony youth nor a complex firm gent; it was texturally too thick and smelled of cheese which wasn't what I was looking for last night

I was never that big a fan of 2005 in the Pays Nantais (warning: vintage generalization). I found even my favorite producers' Muscadets to be a bit blowsy and unfocused, especially in contrast to the altogether excellent 2004s they'd produced. I live to be proved wrong, however.

1986 Huet Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Sec - Went looking for an old bottle of Vouvray and found this one, which I have no recollection of ever buying. It showed well. All of the wonderful old chenin scents: mushroom, quince, lemon rind, dry but quite rich in the mouth with great length. Drink and hold.

Also the Quenard Mondeuse VV mentioned above continues to shine. Certainly the most serious bottle of mondeuse I've ever encountered. Really a wine worth checking out.

2013 Clos du Val Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon - On another board there was talk about this wine and all the points and the bargain price but what grabbed me was that someone from the winery chimed in and was very proud of this bottling and the work that went into it. First pour is all acid and tannin, quite dry and I like it. After an hour some rich fruit builds but still there is solid tannic structure. Had to go to bed. Returning to the wine a couple days later there is vanilla and blackberry fruit in a big frame but still tar tinged tannin with real grip. All in all it's not for me but it was fun to try a pointy Napa cab without spending a hundred bucks. Also the label is very appealing, simple and well designed.

Von Hovel Oberemmeler Hütte Riesling Kabinett 2001 last night was just stunning - deep and fresh with a perfect balance of r.s. and acidity. Rahsaan, this was from the auction lot we split six years ago.

2012 Gamay Dupasquier unfortunately corked.

2012 Prologue Ducroux fortunately is its typically reliably delicious.

('10 BOUCHARD Parcelle last night was awesome, btw)

Nice. I can imagine this was great. Everything from 2001 is long gone for me, unfortunately.

2010 Luneau Papin L d'Or was tasting great last night. When I first bought it a few years back it seemed on the richer rounder side of Muscadet but last night with some pan fried scallops it was very focused and balanced.

Kirk we tried the Lenoir 07 Chinon this week as well. I love it. Ideal version of Chinon for me.

Pepiere 2010 "Ch. Thebaud" last night with sesame-crusted pan-roasted wild salmon. The wine is full and rich, but not too ripe, and plenty of matter to accompany the food. If you can find it, you should buy more and drink and hold.
