What did you drink tonight?

Ira graciously tasted me on Domaine Roulot 2013(?) Monthélie Blanc 1er "Champ Fulliot". Blind, this was either some crazy Italian varietal or chardonnay grown in a skimpy place. As I am not a fan of big lush chardonnay this was an unexpected pleasure: it had a passing resemblance to Chablis - steely, stony, bright - but without the chalk and seashell aspect.

That sounds very cool. Hi to Ira. Though boo to Roulot's steeply increasing priciness.

The 2011 JJ Christoffel Urziger Wurzgarten Spatlese Trocken Alte Reben is such an austere, bare, steel rod of a riesling. Severe, firm, rigid, poised, with a dancing acidic tingle to give it intensity. But so spare.

That said, I do not want to imply that this is a non-wine wine. There is something there. I am just not sure what it is. If I close my eyes and get fanciful, I can almost conjure the fruit berry salad we know from off-dry UW. And a couple of days of air helps in that regard. Although still, it remains austere and bare.

Interesting and not bad. Certainly fine at the dinner table for a glass or two. But almost completely identical to a bottle from summer 2013. I have no idea what the future holds, but I have no more and will probably never find out.

I am all for ambiguity and ambivalence, but this left me feeling down.

My ambivalence also left me feeling a bit down. So I opened another wine to perk things up and never actually finished the bottle of Christoffel, even after several days.

Gee, another boring trocken. My surprise is, um...

Fair enough.

Although this complaint makes the most sense in the Mosel. I'm not sure that dry German riesling from the rest of the country is any more boring as a category than riesling from anywhere else.

2014 Clos Roche Blanche Cuvee Pif, at day three, is at maximum depth. It has shed everything and is tasting like pure minerals. Starting to hallucinate now . . .

Nicolas Gonin Persan 2012 is ready to go right out of the bottle, beautiful nose, great fruit and acidity, long finish. Too easy to drink now but can age a little too.

YUM

1992 Domaine aux Moines - Roche aux Moines - Savennieres: the color shows its age but with a tint of green. The nose is remarkable with stone fruits and honey, pale mint and hay. Some wooly bitterness in the mouth suggests botrytis but with air it is overcome by the flavors of aged, dense fruit. Lots of weight throughout. Kind of a wild ride. Very good though the '94 might be in a better place right now.

Finishing the last couple ounces of a half bottle of Muller Catoir haardter burgegarten rieslaner beerenauslese 1998 opened ten days ago and it isas delicious now as it was then. Perfect acidity and r.s. with spherical fruit tasting more of raisins than botrytis. Terrific juice. I

Sorry. 1998. Edited.
