Garrett Pierce
I'll be visiting Sardinia in March and I'm wondering if there are any "can't miss" growers to taste with.
Contini is already on my list, and maybe Argiolas...

Many thanks!

If you're anywhere near San Francisco before then, you may wish try La Ciccia, an outstanding Sardinian restaurant here with an extensive list of Sardinian (and other Italian) wines.

Get it out of his system before he goes there, eh?
Maybe learn a bit of what to look for, what to avoid. I've had many whites that I've liked, but reds can be a real problem.

Garrett Pierce? I know a Garrett Pierce. Do I know this Garrett Pierce?

Panevino is one of the most powerful experiences I have had visiting a winery. Mr. Manca is I think one of the most interesting people in wine. At least to me. And his wife makes excellent cookies.

I would seek out Columbu, of Malvasia di Bosa and Mondovino fame.

Capichera I would be curious about.

How is your Italian?

Hey Levi! Yeah, it's the GP you know. Thanks for your suggestions (and thanks to Robert as well)!

I live in the Bay Area and La Ciccia is my very favorite restaurant. Massimo and Lorella have given me a few suggestions, but I thought I'd hit up the Disorderlies as well.

I'm in an Italian 2 class, so I'll hopefully know my verbs by the time I reach the island.

Is the trip employer official, or for your own pleasure? I feel like Giorgio is who you should really talk to.

I don't have a grower recommendation but I do recommend eating at the very traditional Il Caminetto in Cabras, great wine list and great seafood, some from the nearby lagoon. Had a memorable scorpionfish in tomato sauce there.

Garrett Pierce indeed. Man of the people. Try Sardus Pater. Of course I haven't visited them, but the vermentino and cannonau - and carignano - are excellent.

All hail Garrett!

I've never been to Sardinia. My niece has, and I've met some awfully nice Sardinian friends of hers, but I suppose that isn't much help to you.

It depends on where you go in Sardinia. North or South?
Roads are not exactly wonderful in the island and it takes a few hours to get from Cagliari to Alghero or to Costa Smeralda.
If you are north, in the region of Vermentino, you can visit Capichera, Surrau, both in Arzachena, go to Tempio Pausania and visit the Cantina Sociale Gallura. If you happen to be north-east go to visit Cherchi in Usini.
In the center of Sardinia Columbu, Contini are in the region of Oristano, another nice wine to try is the Semidano in the area of Mogoro. Then there are a lot of small cannonau producers in the center of the island.
Best if you manage to pay a visit to my friend Roberto of Enoteca Dotvini in San Sperate, north of Cagliari. He has a profound selection of wines, with all sorts of producers.

I myself would rather see Dettori, Sedilesu, Montisci (great cannonau producers, of rich style) than Argiolas or Sella e Mosca, but I'm sure that Roberto can advise you some other producers to visit

Since we're talking about
Garrett Pierces and all: does "All Masks" ring a bell? If so, nice job, dude. Either way, have fun in Sardinia.
Best,
John

The same GP.

A local importer is liquidating these Dettoris. Customers must have had some bad experiences. I know zilch about Dettori, and tend to stay away from hotter climate wines, but if anyone here thinks any or several has enough acidity, I'd love to try your recommendations (the two without vintages don't list them, perhaps they are NV):

Dettori Renosu Rosso Romangia IGT
Dettori Bianco Vermentino Romangia IGT 2007
Dettori Renosu Bianco Romangia IGT
Dettori Renosu Cannonau Romangia IGT 2006
Dettori Bianco Vermentino Romangia IGT 2010
Dettori Chimbanta Rosso Romangia IGT 2007
Dettori Tenores Rosso Romangia IGT 2009

Provenance, provenance, provenance.

In my (not vast) experience, these wines are alive. Sometimes too alive. Back vintages in a warm market....

Not a risk I would take, YMMV.
