Suddenly... Lexington, MA

Jeff Grossman
I'll be in Lexington, MA for two weeks, at least. Anybody know any good wine stores or restaurants there?

I'll have a car so I can drive to Boston proper but, seriously, driving in Boston, are you mad?

Thanks for any pointers.

You might want to pm Mike Lawton just in case he's not checking the board, he lives further out that way off 2.

Wine shops worth a visit in and around the 95 loop:
Vintages in Concord http://www.vintagesonline.com/
Gordon's in Waltham http://www.gordonswine.com/
Marty's in Newton http://www.martysfinewine.com/
Thanks. A lurker already pointed me towards Gordon's, though I have to say that their website is awful to navigate. I hope the aisles are better.

Haven't been since we left MA in 2007 but the food and wine were always good at Il Capricio. Wine list still looks interesting. http://www.ilcapricciowaltham.com/Restaurant.html
Wow. That looks excellent. It'll break the per diem bank but a great menu and a great list. Thank you.

just as messy on site
but sometimes makes good finds
and reasonable prices (plus 20% on a mixed case)
other than that, just visit us in somerville, that is pretty close

Not been to Bondir but foodwise, 80 Thoreau (www.80thoreau.com) is real good but may also break the per diem bank. Also heard aka Bistro is good in Lincoln (www.akabistrolincoln.com). Other than those, if food is the goal - drive to Somerville or Cambridge, IMHO.

on edit - looks like aka is closed due to some water damage so forget that one.

For wine - we have some stores, but no restaurant in the western burbs that I'd visit for wine, other than the few that will allow BYO.

Jeff,

For other wine stores near you:
Spirited Gourmet in Belmont has some interesting wines and interesting weekend in-store tastings.
Berman's is in Lexington near the Arlington line. Arborway imports is them. Haven't been there for a while but might be worth a look.

Waltham has lots of good "ethnic" restaurants, especially Indian, and very worthwhile Indian groceries as well, on Moody Street,

where you'll also find New England Charcuterie retail store Moody Deli. Incredibly nice people and good locally made charcuterie.

Best,
Charles

Thank you, Charles. I like the idea of locally-made charcuterie. Maybe I'll swing through Waltham on my way from Back Bay to Burlington.

I agree, avoid driving when possible.
Restaurants we have enjoyed recently:

Oleana in Cambridge - excellent "Mediterranean" food with a distinct tilt towards the east (Greece/turkey/Lebanon); adventurous wine list, ranging from Savagnin to Tannat Rose' to Vigouroux's Cahors Gouleyant.

Elephant Walk - a mini-chain of Cambodian-French restaurants, the menu is more like Cambodian or French or somewhat fused dishes, with a few outliers. However, most of the dishes are pretty good and some stellar. My gratin of quinoa actually came out more like a delicious moussaka from a top vegetarian restaurant like Greens in its prime. The crepe with braised duck and mushrooms was also very good. Fairly diverse and thoughtful wine list.

Re charcuterie:
this has the hours and address, etc but not the contents of the deli counter.
Freezer cases as well.

And you're a little late; A third branch of Elephant Walk just closed in Waltham after many years., It was on main street near the corner of...you guessed it...Moody St.

For Indian frestaurants there are about a half dozen choices within a couple of blocks. I like Little India (small and cozy), where we're going tomorrow night, and New Mother India (more expansive and fancier though not expensive).

On Il Capriccio, I'm mixed. I LOVED it the first few times I went, a number of years ago. I've never been to Piemonte, unfortunately, but got the impression that if I had been - the food would be similar. Lots of grilled meats, risotto, etc. Really nice stuff.

On recent visits, the food has been fine but I get the sense that the restaurant is going in a more broadly "continental" direction rather than so focused. I recognize that the food "genre" is different but in Waltham, I prefer Campania these days over Il Capriccio. In the back of my head, I wonder if the ownership change (two to one) at Il Capriccio also brought a bit of a direction change?

Hm. Gustazo Cuban in Belmont might also be worth a trip? BYO. Really liked the food the one time we went there.

And coming to this general part of Boston without a trip to Formaggio Kitchen would be a mistake. Even if (gasp) you do not like cheese.

I'll second the Il Capriccio and Elephant Walk recommendations.

If you can swing into Somerville, the Wine and Cheese Cask is definitely worth a visit. You won't find much specific on the website, but here it is for reference: http://www.thewineandcheesecask.com/

Nearby in Cambridge is cheese heaven: http://www.formaggiokitchen.com/

I work in Burlington. Not a lot of destination restaurant there I'm afraid.

There is one of the few reasonable Korean BBQs of the region there. Unfortunately they seem not very open to the idea of BYOB, despite lacking a license.
