Smilin' Joe Salamone

Joe S. is really a super nice guy.

Joe D. as well. But not as nice as Joe S.

I do not know Lettie T.

Crush is lucky to have held onto Joe this long.

You are quite correct on all fronts.

ah yes, guilty of not trying that freisa
I have been fond of mascarello's on occasion.

Did seem a slight bit cher, no?

Prices are like points, you need a currency converter.

(for wine lovers in the Carolinas still trying to decode my prose, that was a yes)

The wine is better than many Barolo offered for the same tariff.

I thought to myself, why should I buy the 2010 Kye for that price when I can find the 2008 of the same for nearly identical pricing? After all, the wine ages well. But then I tried the 2010 recently, and it is awesome. In fact, I have been so often impressed with 2010 Piemonte reds that I really wouldn't hesitate to think about purchasing some in quantity, if I had the means.

To each their own, of course.

Eh, he just borrowed one of Cappellano's "b"s.

Anyone seen any of the Kye with significant age on it again? There was that '89 that going around NYC a few years back. Kick myself that I didn't grab a few- Vajra wasn't a producer I really knew until I came up to Boston.

The bottle of 89 I had was tremendous. The first dry Freisa from Vajra.

I remember getting some 89 and 90 Vajra freisa from Crush a few years back but it wasn't labeled Kye, just a regular freisa label. Are those different bottlings or did they just start calling it Kye at some point?

I had the 01 Kye last week - brought a bottle to Dino. It's in a nice spot, super-aromatic - I liked it better than those 89/90s.

Indeed the 89 was not labelled Kye because it was a mistake. The wine I mean. It was not intended to ferment dry. Before that, Vajra had been making a semi-sweet Freisa. Kye is a local term that might be translated as "What is this?" or "Who is this?" said with a bit of curiosity and perhaps apprehension. After the 1989 sold so well at the winery, and customers asked for more of it, the Vaira family decided to make a dry Freisa regularly, and the Kye bottling was born. Somewhere there is a podcast interview where this is discussed in detail.

My bottle of 1989 was tremendous, and I have no less of an authority than Joe Salamone, who drank it with me, to verify my claim. But even he at that time vouchsafed the information that some reports of bottles of 1989 were not as glowing. Something about an influential Cellartracker personality not being as pleased with it.

I have not had the 1990.

I'll wait for a critical mass of Cellartracker reviews for the 2010 then, before I invest.

The consonants may still be for sale at that time, but the vowels will have been taken.
