New York 26 April - 3 May‏

Ignacio Villalgordo
I will be in New York on these dates. In this sense I would really look forward to meeting some of you if you're inclined. Will sure bring some interesting wines.

Additionally I have a ton of recommendations of places to eat, but some suggestions will be more than welcome. In particular I would be interested in knowing:

Where to eat great steak. Same applies to burger, wine bars, dim sum, brunch...

Hope to see you

Thanks in advance

Best regards,

Ignacio

I'll go out on a limb and put a few suggestions out there for people to criticize.

For steak, I like Keen's Steakhouse, particularly the Ribeye and the Chateaubriand. They also have $20/bottle corkage, which is reasonable by NY steakhouse standards. The stems are fine, but otherwise wine service is no frills, so you'll probably want to request to pour your own wine.

For a burger, personally I like the lamb burger at the Breslin. Cool wine list, too.

Pearl & Ash and Ten Bells are the go-to wine bars. Racines NY will also fall in that category if it is open by the time you are in NYC.

I leave dim-sum and brunch to the experts.

As DC is my new home, I won't be able to jeeb with you this time. But I hope you have a good trip.

This Michael Lewis character knows his whats.

I would add the black label burger at Minetta Tavern under "burger."

I would suggest Royal Seafood (or whatever it is calling itself now) on Mott for dim sum.

I would dissuade from brunch, but maybe that is just me.

I had an awful lunch my last visit to Keens, but it was a while back.

I like Diner for steak, though it depends whether you want grass or grain-finished beef. I also like my house for steak, for me it is mostly a dish I prepare at home.

Our comrades have advised you well.

for steak I would add the bone-in ribeye at the strip house (they also have lovely sides: creamed corn with pancetta and potatoes cooked in goose fat) and the costata at Costata.

for a burger i find i am always happy at diner in williamsburg, accompanied by a wd friendly wine list.

If you'd like some fun, whimsical yet still delicious dim sum Red Farm is worth a trip for the Katz' Pastrami Spring Roll alone. The Pac Man Shrimp dumplings looked charming but I haven't tried them yet. Maybe on Sunday.

Depending on what you're looking for in steak Costata is a lot better than the reviews make it out to be.

I like brunch at Maialino (or you can do the aforementioned Red Farm).

Ouch. Was it the company?
Certainly not.

Do you not recall sending our meals back to the kitchen? I don't do that much.

this from the man whose dictum is, "don't you realise what they can put in your food if you piss them off?"

what went wrong?

My memory is that the chops were more or less raw.

That's right! You are correct. I had forgotten.

But I should mention that I was there recently for a pleasant long afternoon. The mutton was cooked to my liking, the 91 Boca from Piane was friggin fantastic, and I saw MacArthur's pipe (which was not corn cob, surprisingly).

Piling on...

I've had mixed experiences at Keen's, though mostly good. I had a terrible experience at Strip House. I have not been to Costata but I note that Jay Miller is quite right that the steak at Marea is very, very good. And, of course, there is Peter Luger's.

Do you know your schedule well-enough to pick a night for jeebusing?

A large, multilevel H&M clothing store has recently opened right beneath my office building. Each morning walking from the subway station to the building, I am treated to the giant pixellated spectacle of a man captions inform me is David Beckham.*

*I am lying; I already knew who he was. But I had assumed he had gone through the active years of his soccering career?

Beckham is riding the wave of a series of box office hits about Bobby Jones, in a parallel sport. Thus the commercial success. Last time I visited a men's department store, I walked away from Bobby Jones knickerbockers and David Beckham hair gel, on my way to a James Suckling super tuscan tasting.
