Tuesday the 18th

Steve Edmunds

Steve Edmunds
I'm coming into town for the Bowler tasting (which is Wednesday), and would enjoy company for dinner Tuesday if anyone is free and interested.

you locals know where to eat, maybe? I hope to be in town by 6:30-7:00pm. I like Trestle, but would love to eat somewhere I haven't been if it's good and not hard to get to. I'm staying in Chelsea.

I should be able to attend. If nothing else Grand Sichuan is always an option.

Anyone know how the Chelsea branch is these days?

and trestle has always been kind about byo

Is anyone organizing this? If not, should I make a reservation somewhere?

Steve - what start time were you looking for for dinner? 7:15? 7:30?

Currently I see:

If anyone else is interested, please let us know.

Steve - any preference for restaurant?

If you want to stay in Chelsea we have have Trestle on Tenth, Grand Sichuan (though the Chelsea branch doesn't take reservations for small groups and is usually crowded), Recette has great food but is pricier and has $25 corkage.

Any other suggestions are welcome.

If you're willing to go further afield we have Amali on 60th between Park and Lexington (you can take the F train). Food is very good, their quirk is that they must approve any bottles you bring in but then they allow free corkage. They haven't rejected any bottles we've brought to date so we should be fine assuming we can get a table in back (the front room is very noisy).

Peking Duck House is always easy (you can take the E train there) and the food has gotten much better recently. Free corkage.

The Grand Sichuan on St. Marks place is good and will take reservations. $10/person corkage. It's my usual branch these days.

Keens does a decent steak or lamb chop for $20 corkage.

my plane is scheduled in at 4:30 (JFK). I'm guessing I should be to my hotel by 7 at the latest, right? Anytime after is fine. (I'm on E.29th, near Madison.) Let's do Trestle, ok?

Sounds good. I'll call this afternoon to make a reservation for either 4 (in the hopes of a fourth) or more if I hear back from multiple people. I sent out a few emails to people who might not check the board regularly enough.

Excellent!

If anyone else is interested let me know and I'll see if we can increase the reservation (since it's a Tuesday night that seems likely).

Here are such notes as I was able to decipher from from my scribblings.

2010 Stadlmann Mandel-Hoh Zierfandler - Delicious

2008 Frick Vorbourg Grand Cru Riesling - not especially forthcoming at hte moment. shutdown, short finish. I always like their gewurtztraminers but am usually underwhelmed by their rieslings

2012 Pigato Riviera Ligure di Ponente Terre Bianche - wow, delicious wine. Beautiful.

2007 Leroy Aligote - stinky, sulphury, undrinkable

1993 Trapet Chambertin - Tannic and young. Beautiful material but needs another 5-10 years. Though if you don't mind tannins it's delicious now but will reward further aging.

1980 Pichon Lalande - good classic claret. Not a world shaker but quite enjoyable.

1968 Marchesi di Barolo, drinking well, mushroomy, good match with the duck.

1984 Mayacamas Cabernet - sternly expansive nose, cedar and cassis after a double decant. Young wine just entering its prime with a perfect piercing purity

1987 de Montille Pommard Rugiens - soft bouquet, pretty delicate wine.

1998 Mascarello Barolo Monprivato - nice, very long, medium bodied. A little cherry.

2012 Willi Schaefer Graacher Dombropst #9 Auslese - deep and complex but not as enthralling as the #14. Very concentrated and dense, needs time.
