During local fruit season I am most definitely happy to be in Chapel Hill, but in the off season I miss the variety of shopping options in Nyc. So I turn to the internet.

Has anyone here ever ordered alphonso mangoes online? Any recommended sites/purveyors?

Google brings me up lots of different options, but would prefer to get some recommendations/somebody vouching for a specific company.
 
For online mango ordering, I'd normally recommend Robert is Here, from south Florida, but it's not mango season there. When it is, though, you should check them out--really outstanding fruit (Francis Lam praised them back when Gourmet existed and I think his article is still online).
 
Thanks. I didn't even realize mangoes were grown in the US. I had initially been thinking of India (and those websites will allow you to order/pay right now, even though delivery is months away), but I may check them out.
 
I have some experience with Roberts is Here, in large part because they got a very favorable writeup in Ed Behr's The Art Of Eating. The mangoes were only okay and not worth the price of shipping.
 
Yes, and that (plus pineapples) is what I have been surviving on during previous Aprils. But I figured why not try something new. Especially given all the hyperbole about alpohnso mangoes being the 'King of Mangoes'.

My wife has been to Robert is Here and brought back a good selection of tropical fruits to New York in her hand luggage. The mango she brought back was great. Apparently, it hadn't been boiled like most are in the U.S. to kill the bugs under the skin. We can vouch for their also having very tasty passion fruits, star fruits, red lady papaya, canistel (egg fruit) and black sapote.
 
South American grapes, pineapples and local honeycrisps out of storage is about it right now. But hey, strawberries aren't too far off.

Didn't know mangoes were boiled before shipping. Man I've had some lousy mangoes this winter.
 
Well it may not be mango season yet, but the write-up on Robert is Here had me so intrigued that I ordered a box of canistel and mamey that arrived today.

Most of them still need a bit more time to soften, but for dessert we had one canistel that was getting there. While it did not fully replicate the Deep Funk of the tropics, it came close enough, and had so much fun flavor that I can see myself ordering more from these folks. Even if the mangoes aren't tops. Thanks!
 
I've since ordered a follow-up box of guavas and sapodillas from Robert is Here and even if it doesn't literally replicate the feel of the tropics, I am very pleased to add this new option to my Fruit Arsenal. (The sapodillas in particular blew my mind, I had never even heard of them before but always happy to add new delicious flavors to my life).

There may be better sources for online fruit ordering, and I will keep my eyes open, but this is a nice one to have available.

(Although I think it helps that I'm close enough to Florida where I can do 2-day ground delivery. Elsewhere in the US might require air, which would make it very very expensive, instead of just slightly expensive).
 
I'm glad the fruit was a success! When my wife went to Robert is Here with my brother-in-law, they saw a jolly-looking man in the back of the store blissfully enjoying some tropical fruit. They said to each other, "It must be Robert!" and indeed it it was.

We also like Friend's Ranch for mail-order fruit and are thinking of trying out their Plain Jane box, which ships for free.
