And now a few words from our...

I'm really regretting not stashing 2008 and 2007 so that I would have more to drink while waiting on other vintages. Just goes to show, don't ever skip a vintage at Baudry. I followed that advice with Croix Boissée, but should have with Grezeaux. I'll never not buy a case of each every vintage. Well, storage permitting, of course.

I don't have 07 CB, but I just can't see rushing 07 G at the moment. I think a case of the estate bottling must be added to fulfill your strategy.

Yes, Domain every year. I didn't buy 2007 or 2008 of anything but Croix Boissée to lay down. Mistake. I'm down to my last few 2005 Domain and then it is 2009 and 2010.

I'm a bit of an apostate, but I buy more of the Grezeaux than I do the CB. And the Domain does keep my paws off the good stuff, it's true.

I just bought a few 11 CB, too; may open our penultimate 07 this weekend. Have not yet seen the 11 Grezeaux, Guillot, or Domaine in local places.

Today I learn that in future there will be more Baudry to go around. the source being an unlikely one:

"The story of Olek-Mery has been told a number of times but it bears repeating (I’ll be succinct):

Cabernet Franc

Fantastic terroir

Wine is made by Bernard Baudry

That’s about all that you need to know...except...Baudry thinks so highly of this terroir that he has secured it for his own post-2012. From now on, Olek-Mery will be a Baudry wine, under his own label. Whether he includes this vineyard in another cuvee or bottles it separately is yet to be determined but the fact that he now controls its destiny should tell you that this is a highly desirable slice of Chinon terra firma."

As an aside, Ian, I've been entering a bunch of new wines into CT this week as the Spring shipping season commences. For no less than 2/3 of them, I find a Fitzi tasting note affixed to their entry. Are you doing a comprehensive survey of currently available GeekWines or something? If so, I'm envious, dude.

I'm easily led by fashion, it's true; but the fair pricing plus good quality for many of the wines chatted about here often makes it hard to resist at least a try.

Did you really count?

it is particularly impressive given that you aren't local to NYC, and therefore are less likely to be influenced by hipster Brooklyn wine bar scene.

p.s. the other professor does not need to count

Central VA does pretty well for itself in that regard.

hipster wine bars?? do tell please

Not so much wine bars, but restaurants and shops that are paying attention.
Secco and Barrel Thief in Richmond (both wine bar/shops), Clifton Inn, Tavola, Mas in Charlottesville.

Just out of interest, know of anything up by Winchester/Front Royal?

I don't. Since moving back to Northern California my explorations of Northern Virginia have come to a close.

The 2006 Croix Boissé is indeed shut down hard. The 2007 and 2008 have both shown well recently.

Drank last night, from a cold cellar, the '06 Croix Boissé was a harmonious, lovely, close to profound, expression of Chinon, Cabernet Franc and Baudry. It still was 'of the purple' and has decades to go, but is very enjoyable now.

Thank you for this note.
It was 8 years ago nearly to the day since I last tasted this and it was painfully intense at the time.
I only have two bottles remaining; based on your note I think I'll wait a bit longer.

This was my first of four, and like you I am going to wait a year before opening another.

Perhaps the bottle last night is best thought of as having just entered the Vulgar Monkey drinking window, as I understand that quality.

The skill of the wine maker is obvious, but not intrusive. The first impression on the tongue effortlessly gives way to the most pleasant little pop of something minty on the entire mid-palate. Super-pure fruit. A seamless, expansive body that hints at a generous future mineral quality. An herbaceous aroma and finish on the palate brings the whole thing back to its cab franc roots.

charming acidity that gave an almost loving accompaniment to the meal.

One of the best bottles of wine I have had in quite some time.
